11. Arizona cornerback, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie vs. Eric Green and Rod Hood -- Arizona's projected starters at cornerback are Green and Hood, but the team's first-round pick could change that with a strong preseason. Rodgers-Cromartie has prototypical NFL cornerback size (6-2, 182) and speed (4.29), and the Cardinals love his ability to get his hands on the ball in coverage. Green missed the last five games of 2007 and is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract. He didn't have an interception last season, although his 12 passes defensed ranked second to Hood's 21. Hood picked off five passes and started every game at left cornerback.

I don't think DRC has to make the starting lineup from day 1 to be successful. I'd rather them bring him along a little slower by letting him play in the nickel and working him into the starting lineup later in the season. The NFL will be a huge jump from Tennessee State. It might take him half a season or even the whole season to adjust to the speed of the game, but he'll be a great player when everything comes together.

DRC is going to be tested right off the bat having to go against 2 pro bowlers. It will be a good measuring stick to see how he stacks up against Fitz and Boldin.

He'll need to get a little bigger as well, but I do predict he'll be starting opposite Hood around midseason.

DRC wont be the starter going into preseason but by game one he will be the starter in front of Green.

Green is going into his 4th year, has started 24 games, he is pretty much what he is and is about as good as he will ever get, which is average (which is better then a lot of other CB's in the league). So if DRC can show that he is even average his first season the Cards will put him into the fold as a starter and start his growth process.

Just dont have any high hopes that a 4th year guy after plenty of game time is suddenly going to get better.

I hope you're right Joe. Green would make a solid nickle back.

Ever since Aeneas left, I've been haunted by the spectacle in game after game - of WR's catching the ball in front of one of various Cardinal CB's who were late to break on the ball.

We saw occasional glimpses of this changing when Rod Hood would jump the play or Eric Green (when he was healthy and brought his "A" game) would close fast to break up a pass. But those were the exceptions and not the rule.

What I saw in DRC - especially in the Senior Bowl - was a corner doing precisely what I saw lacking most of the time from Cardinal CB's. (When the ball was thrown in front of him, he was there. And at the same time, he didn't bite on fakes to get beaten deep.

It's hard to say how fast a CB adapts to a system and performs consistently well enough to be trusted, but my guess is that DRC will be our starter earlier not later.

When you have the sort of planet talent that DRC has, his adjustment to the speed of the NFL will be quicker that for most. I see him taking to the NFL like a fish to water. I love this pick.

Some scouts question whether he's physical enough or not.. We'll see what Q has to say about that :D

Eric Green just completed his first year with real coaching, AND he is going into a contract year. He spent part of last year unlearning bad coaching and being injured. I would imagine the potential is there for seeing more from him yet this year.

Good point, don't ever discount the motivation of these guys in a contract year. He knows if he's get supplanted by a rookie, he'll get minimal offers next off season.

Physical corners like Rolle (was projected that way anyway) have less and less of an advantage. Rules keep changing minimizing the amount of contact CB's can have.

Good points. They may be valid or schmo may be right that Eric Green will always be a marginal player. Even if he does not improve much, he may very well have a cost/performance ratio that will keep him here a few more years.
