Televised on one of the ESPNs Weds (July 13) - I believe at 7 PM our time, but I am not 100% sure. Conor Jackson, Andy Green, Jason Bulger from the DBacks, plus Mike Parrot Sidewinder's pitching coach, is on the PCL All-star coaching staff. Last week on TV Thom said (told by Mike Swanson, PR Director) that Carlos was also going, but he's not listed on the official roster as of tonight.

Green and Jackson both got hits in the first, Conor's brought in a run. I liked how Conor went to the opposite field for his hit. You see so many hitters who try and pull everything. It's 5-1 PCL in the first.

OK, even I found the gushing over Conor a bit thick (even if its mainly true.) They persist in stereotyping him as a power-hitter because of his size, and power may happen in time, but if that's the expectation now, people could be disappointed.

He hit 2-2 plus a walk, and a very fine diving stab for an out. Andy Green was 2-3, and Jason Bulger pitched a brisk, efficient inning.

Did you see right after they interviewed him at the start of the game (has he learned all the cliches?!) he was sipping water from a paper cup, and then (not realizing he was still on camera) he ATE it! He chomped it flat and stuffed it in his cheek for an in-game chew. I thought that was so funny - one minute stud prospect, next minute a 13-year-old boy.

Didn't realize the Double-A Allstar game was last night, too. (I can't quite get used to us being the Tennessee Smokies):

Tennessee (All-Star Game)
North 12 South 5

With their manager (Tony Perezchica) leading the team, all 5 Smokies representatives appeared in the game and they all contributed to the North's convincing win. Dan Uggla and Jesus Cota each had RBIs while Enrique Gonzales, Mike Schultz and Casey Daigle didn't allow any runs in their 1 inning of work each.

Conor vs. Tracy

So where does this battle go? Conor Jackson and Chad Tracy are both excellent contact hitters, but lack the big pop that most first basemen have. It almost like the DBacks have a love affair with these guys (ie Mark Grace, Lyle Overbay).

Jay's opinion: Don't trade Tracy, that guy can hit, .300+ similar to Gracey. Jackson not sure, but we need to find out what he can do in the big leauges. Solution: Trade Glaus and Green. The two most anti-clutch players I have ever seen. Trade Glaus now while he still has some value. He will be hurt like Sexson, but every year. Green is barely average and he makes 10M a year, for 3 more years. It will probably cost us at least Santos and 10M, but it has to happen. If we surrround our young guys with marginal quiet players what will we expect to happen to them?

I really dont understand why many people hate Glaus and Green. They are both giving the team pretty much exactly what they were expected to numerically. Glaus should have better numbers with RISP (he is over a .300 hitter career in that category), otherwise they are having good seasons. The offense of the Diamondbacks is certainly not the problem of the team.

The offense may not be the biggest problem, but it is a problem. Scoring three runs or fewer in something like 17 of the last 25 games is a big problem. To me it is anyway.

Glaus

Glaus' production might be OK from a statistical view, but it is downright horrible from a baseball view.

I watched a game against Detroit that exemplified his whole season. His first two times up, he had the bases loaded. First time: strikes out 3 pitches. Second time: strike out again. Third time (no one on base): solo home run.

Now if you were looking at the stats, you might say Glaus had a great game, he hit a home run. When in reality a bases loaded single to keep the rally going does a lot more than a solo home run.

Green has picked up production in the last few weeks, but I don't see him ever returning to a .300 hitter.

Catch any of the recent games vs. the Reds? Or the series before that vs. the Giants? The same Reds that had one of the worst ERA's in baseball if not the worst? The Reds that the Diamondsbacks made look like a staff of Cy Youngs?

I agree, you can give me whatever statistics you want, Green is finally starting to earn his ridiculous paycheck, but Glaus has been downright awful when it counts. I can't count the number of times he has failed to get a runner over, failed to get a big hit, struck out with a guy on third with less than two outs... His gaudy home run numbers impressed a few people at the beginning of the season, but his numbers are dropping considerably here.

The "Craig Counsell" for all star controversy has died down quite a bit, although his numbers can at least be argued to be deceptive as well, with some pretty big hits. He has been hitting terribly lately however, going from an average of around .320 to around .270 at this point. Thank God Cintron has been inserted since he is the only player that is doing anything up the middle now.

That is really all I am saying about the offense. I think it is a problem that the Dbacks get so little production on a consistent basis from Clayton, Snyder, Cruz, Terrero, McCracken, etc.
