LAFAYETTE — Triton had the task of trying to stun a program riding the coat tails of its first shot at history in Clinton Prairie.

Triton carried the No. 1 defense heading into Saturday but were ill prepared for the length and athleticism established by the Gophers from tip off.

Triton couldn't recover from a 10-3 first quarter run established by Clinton Prairie and fell in the IHSAA Class 1A Semi-state semifinal game 62-47

Clinton Prairie (25-2) continued its longest postseason run and played Kouts in the IHSAA Semi-state championship.

But Triton couldn't get open looks from 3-point range to fall consistently. Landon Patrick and Dante Workman each scored 12 points and Gage Riffle added 10 points for Triton (23-5).

"I thought we worked the ball, got good shots and they just didn't go in," Triton coach Jason Groves said.

Triton shot 4-of-22 from 3-point range but rallied from a 25-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and made one final push 61-46 with 1:21 to play before time ran out.

"That's what we are capable of doing," Groves said. "They didn't want their season to end and it shows their grit, their character and their toughness. I'm proud of them."

Triton completed another successful campaign after it won its seventh regional title over Lakewood Park 63-40 last Saturday in Bourbon and 15th sectional title over Trinity Greenlawn in North Judson the previous weekend.

Groves has 346 wins and a state championship along with 10 sectional titles, five regionals and four semi-state titles during his 20 seasons as head coach with Triton.

"When you have consistency in a program which we do working with the younger kids and developing our younger kids than they know what we want from our program," Groves said. "That builds a lot of success and not to mention I've been blessed with a lot of really good basketball players."
