Trying to save a dino

Question for those that are geekier than I...

Can I run this processor:

Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 89W Single-Core Processor - OEM

On a board (the one tht is installed now) that has this requirement?

Supports Intel​

Supports 1.5GHz, 1.6GHz, 1.7GHz, 1.8GHz, 1.9GHz, 2GHz and up.

On this board now is a dead Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.53Ghz

The main reason I am unsure is primarily the FSB

This is a backup computer, more or less a feile server for my home so I would hate to buy a new one, I can get that processor and maybe a few new fans for about 100 bucks and not even worry about it for another 5 or so years... Will they work together?

Need to know your motherboard model. If you look on the MOBO itself, you will see a manufacturer and model ID#. Many of the mobos say "and up". However, depending on the processor model, your motherboard might not support the FSB or the voltage requirements.

What is the make and model of the board? I would think yes it should work no problem, but I'd double check on the board makers website.

This is my board. The 645 Ultra. On the board where it says to look it says MS 6547 Ver 2

Newegg.com and tigerdirect.com have tons of board/chip combo deals for cheap. I'm sure you can just get a board and chip for around the same or a little more than that chip was by itself. Just make sure it takes the memory you have. Look at the AMD too as they are cheaper.

Thanks Klod, and bummer... As it just is for network storage anymore, maybe I will just spend a few hundred on a 500 gig or 1tb network drive and scrap the rest of it...

The dino lives... I was going to just scavenge some parts, good sound blaster sound card, ATI 256 mb vid card and 2 gigs of memory and while I was in there I noticed that one clip off of the CPU fan was broken leaving a small gap of micro proportions between the heat sink and the processor. I used the system utility thing in the bios to monitor the cpu temp and it was sitting at about 100 degrees Celsius, when I would run it with the case open and press the fan hard down on the processor the temp would drop to about 48 c.

I went and read a few comments (apparently it is fairly common for the bracket to break) at various sites and found that a P4, to avoid frying, will cut its processing in half if overheated. So I took another fan bracket off of an old P4 board and now this thing runs like a champ!

Maybe this will help someone who has a decent computer and is not ready to spend any money on a new one.

Sorry I didn't respond right away above. Been busy. Glad to hear it worked out. Actually, because of heat, your CPU and/or Memory can become unseated because of expansion and contraction as well. I have had to reseat both memory and CPU before just because of heat. Yours was more obvious. Glad to hear you able to keep it around a bit longer.
