Tuesday Night Football

Governor Ed Rendell sounds off
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5960674

The city of Philadelphia is set to host the NFL's first Tuesday night game in 64 years, and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell couldn't be more upset about it.

"It goes against everything that football is all about," Rendell said Monday on radio station 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia.

Rendell was rankled by the league's decision to move the Philadelphia Eagles' home game against the Minnesota Vikings from Sunday night to Tuesday evening.

"My biggest beef is that this is part of what's happened in this country," Rendell said.

"We've become a nation of wusses. The Chinese are kicking our butt in everything," he added. "If this was in China do you think the Chinese would have called off the game? People would have been marching down to the stadium, they would have walked and they would have been doing calculus on the way down."

"What do you think [Hall of Fame coach Vince] Lombardi would say?" Rendell asked Monday. "He would say that we've become a nation of wusses."

I agree with the governor. Toughen up Philly. Stay home if you can't handle it.

I have a hard time imagining Vince Lombardi using the word "wusses".

Maybe this should be in PR...

My take: Shut up Rendell. This has nothing to do with the players and everthing to do with safety of fans IMO and also $$$. Good luck getting fans to fill a stadium with a 8-10 inches falling of snow and a windchill factor of sub zero.

I dont need the govt, the NFL or anyone else telling me what is in my best interest. The game should be played and if I choose to risk going that is my decision. My safety is my own problem, not the state, the team or the federal govt's concern.

You don't think that it is the governments job to protect the public? Scary.

This game was not postponed by the state, the city, or anyone connected with politics. It was moved by the league after consulting with the team.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had to do with money rather than "public safety". If a significant amount of ticket holders couldn't make it to the game, they lose out on all that parking and concession revenue.

The league is all about the dollar.

The league and the team made the decision... so yes, $$ factored in for sure. However, don't ya think the game would've been a ratings bonanza since the entire city was shut down and people were locked up in their homes?

And to clarify, it wasn't 8-10 inches of snow... they would've played the game if that's all it was. Philly received almost 30 inches of the white stuff.
I couldn't even begin to imagine what the parking lots and the roads leading out of the stadium would've been like in that type of white-out. It would've been a nigthmare to plow the lots with all of the cars parked there.

It's easy to say that they should've played the game... and maybe they should have. But, it would've been a logistical nightmare had they done so. I can see why the game was canceled. Can't say I agree... but, I can see why they did it...

Bingo! Plus multi-million dollar players getting injured. Frozen turf. Bus accident. Chapped hands.

The Eagles president was on ESPN radio and said the decision was made after public transportation was shut down. He also said that they did it not just for fan safety but for the stadium workers safety. The stadium workers would have been there after midnight in a blizzard with zero temp and no way to get home if they used public transportation to get there.

So since that is the case I fully expect all of you "tough guys" on here to either go to work the next time there are severe weather conditions of this level or just shut up and enjoy football tonight.

To tell me what I can or cannot do? NO! Its their job to protect me from others like terrorists, not from myself. If I choose to go die at a football game that is my choice. If I choose to drink, smoke, mainline meth or whatever the case it is my choice. My freedom ends where yours begins, if my habits affect you its a problem, if they only affect me its my problem. The govt should not be protecting me from myself.

God bless arizona, if you like being told what to do move to Cali. You cant even flip the tab on a gas pump and sit in your cab while its pumping there anymore.

Im a grown ass man in a free country, I dont need anyone telling me how to survive.

I agree, the federal governments only job should be to protect us from foreign assaults, and to mitigate disputes between states.

You mean the Great State of Arizona doesn't tell you that you can't drive on highways when they become dangerous? Wow. Guess I'll flip off the highway patrol next time they try to close the highway, and stop me from driving to Flagstaff in a snowstorm.

This isn't about the federal government, it's about all government. Are states allowed to close roads when they become dangerous? The federal government had no involvement in the game being postponed.

It doesn't even matter, the NFL is who postponed the game, not any government.

arizona has its problems also, but we are much more free than most states. I can understand shutting the 17 down when it is iced over because they have to pay for the cleanup when someone flies off a mountain, if I die in the stadium it is reletively cheap to clean up my corpse and ship it to the mortuary.

I would be more than happy with a sign that says CAUTION YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DRIVE TO FLAGSTAFF, I would turn around, if you dont, its your risk.

point was I dont think the NFL should be telling me whats safe and whats not, along with any other entity. Let me worry about my own safety. "caution coffee is hot" she should have never won that lawsuit and it led to a lot of extra damage.

If the NFL was really concerned for fan safety, wouldn't they tell those shirtless fans at games in freezing temperatures to put some clothes back on?

Where's the love? :D
