Jack Turnbull has been a key part of the success of the Zionsville cross country and track teams during the past several seasons.
And while he still has high aspirations for his final track season at Zionsville, Turnbull now officially knows where he will continue his education and running careers at the next level.
Turnbull signed with North Dakota on Friday afternoon. He had a signing ceremony at Zionsville High School.
“It’s been a really long process, and to have that weight off my shoulders is really nice,” Turnbull said.
The Fighting Hawks are an NCAA Division I that competes in the Summit League.
The cross country and track distance coach is Tom Scott.
Turnbull said he was first drawn to the school because they had a strong program in his intended major, and thankfully the athletic part also was a perfect fit.
“They have a great aviation program, which is what I wanted to study and what I was focused on,” Turnbull said. “The combination of the coach, facilities and teammates that I met when I was up there there was great. I am already friends with some of the other recruits coming in, so having that going in there is really nice.”
When talking with the North Dakota coaches, Turnbull said they liked a lot of the intangibles he brings to a team.
That was evidenced by the large contingent of teammates, family and friends that came to support him on Friday at his signing.
“I think I bring good leadership, even when I’m not expected to be a leader,” Turnbull said. “I think the coaches like that. I feel like I have pretty strong character too, so that helped a lot.”
Turnbull finished 18th at the State Meet in cross country in 2023 and 28th this past season.
He helped the Eagles 4x800 team place fourth in the state a year ago, and has twice qualified for state in the 1,600, placing 12th in 4:18.21 in 2023 and 18th last year.
With a final track season remaining in high school, Turnbull wants to make sure he ends his prep career on a high note.
“Really I just want to glorify God in all of it,” Turnbull said. “But my cross country season wasn’t my best, and that’s not who I am. I want to show I can bounce back and be a lot better and establish myself as one of the top runners in Indiana.”
As he took a little time to reflect on his prep career, Turnbull said one of the things he will treasure the most from his time as an Eagle is time he spent with his teammates.
“I am going to remember the culture we had,” Turnbull said. “It has been such a blessing to be here for four years. Honestly I wish it was like college and I could come back for another year. It’s been so fun. The friendships I have made and the laughs that I’ve had on the runs and stuff. It’s truly been a blessing and I’m sad to leave it, but also am excited for what’s next.”
Turnbull will study aviation and hopes to be a commercial pilot after college.
