My new HD receiver from Direct TV is generating a lot of heat. Is that normal?

Also I can no longer receive the closed captioning through that receiver on to my new HD Television. Any suggestions?

Normal. These things generate a ton of heat.

Check the closed captioning settings on the TV.

He said that it was a new HDTV, so I would assume that it is a different TV. The connection to the TV should not have any bearing on closed captioning either.

Closed captioning is in most receivers, cable boxes, dvd players, TV, etc. If one of them is turned off, it may circumvent the other. You have to get into each of their internal settings.

i just wanted to know if CC was working with the same TV and just crapped out on him, or if this is something new with the ne HD reciever.

and connections do matter a lot. the reason i asked about the connections is i know that with Cox Cable, CC is not supported through Component Cables with their HD DVR.

and because this is a new HD reciever with an HD tv, well their is a good chance that he's using Component or HDMI (with HDMI he'll probably have the same problem if its anything like Cox).

I know that Cox has its own internal closed captioning, but satellite companies use a different closed captioning.

Not entirely true.

It depends on the TV.

The closed captioning stopped working once I got the HD Receiver which is connected to the TV with an HDMI cable.

The TV is supposed to support both digital (EIA 708B) and analog (EIA 608B) cc but when I push the caption button on the remote it just says "not available" instead of giving the ususal CC1, CC2 etc. options.

I have never tried it on my DTV HD-DVR receiver. I will give it a try and see what it does.

I just read on a consumer ratings thing that it takes a bunch of extra steps with the remote to get CC. The remote seems to be a problem for DTV HDTV users.
