Synopsis: Bassam "Barry" Al Fayeed is from the fictional war-torn country of Abbudin. He has been living in self-imposed exile in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years. Barry, the younger son of Abbudin's dictator, ends his exile to return with his American family to his homeland for his nephew's wedding. His arrival leads to a dramatic culture clash, as he reluctantly returns to the familial and national politics he once left.

I watched the pilot of this and I think it has possibilities. There's some weak spots and implausibilities as with everything, but I'll give it another couple episodes to see if i hang with it.

I'm surprised I haven't commented here already. I like this show a lot, and think it's still going strong. It's not great, but it does a solid job with political commentary and providing a fictional window into another culture, to help us better understand a demographic so many people just want to hate.

I watched Season 1 and the 1st episode of 2. Even though I like it, this 2nd year's initial episode
seems a bit melodramatic... overplaying Barry's idealistic quest. Is schmaltzy the correct word??

This is the 3rd season, so...?

My bad, I watched the first 2 seasons. I meant 1st episode this season was melodramatic. I miss Jamal, he wasn't schmaltzy.

I actually hate that they kept him alive. I felt he was too one-dimensional. And sure, Basam might be a bit schmaltzy, but there's that ruthless edge about him that always peeks out.
