BATTLE CREEK - When Allison Jacobs was younger, she was eager to hear and spend time with older athletes who were where she wanted to go - playing volleyball at the college level.
Now, the University of Michigan volleyball captain is excited to be doing that for others, as she led a camp in Battle Creek over the weekend that included young players that are in the same position she was in years ago.
"Been wanting to find a way to give back to the volleyball committee as a whole. Wanted to give back and share my love for the sport," said Jacobs.

The Student Athlete Promise (TSAP) camp invited members of two area volleyball clubs to the event - Midwest Select Volleyball and Redline Volleyball. Invitations were also extended to members of the high school volleyball teams at Lakeview and Battle Creek Central.
Jacobs, who will be a fifth-year volleyball player for the Wolverines in the fall, spent the afternoon with local youth volleyball players at the Battle Creek YMCA on Sunday, going through drills, as well as speaking to them about her experiences, playing the part of a mentor.
"Growing up, I had the privilege of having great coaches that inspired me and successful athletes in my own community that inspired me and if I can be that for the young girls around here, that would great," Jacobs said.
Prior to the camp, Jacobs was featured in a TSAP event in March where she spoke over her journey as a college athlete with an audience of students from Battle Creek schools — including Battle Creek Central, Lakeview, Harper Creek, Pennfield, St. Philip and Endeavor Charter Academy.
That is part of the overall vision of TSAP, which was formed to create growth in the area of "equal recreation opportunity and exposure for Battle Creek student athlete," according to Jonathan Matthews, who helped create the program.
"We are excited that Allison has committed to partnering with us. We are grateful she is available to give her time to our youth, taking time out of her busy schedule," said Matthews, when he was explaining the reason for the camp. "We are hoping (she) can help inspire our local youth."
