The U20 World Cup starts today for the US, they are playing South Korea, currently they are tied 1-1, a goal by Danny Szetela for the US. The US is getting thoroughly outplayed though, finishing is as much a problem here as it is with the senior team.

This team features some future national team prospects like Adu, Altidore, Szetela, Seitz and maybe others like Ferrari, Rogers, Sturgis--and of course Michael Bradley who is already a national teamer.

I have to watch the game online through a Chinese channel from Shanghai! I don't get ESPNU. I can't complain though the picture quality isn't bad, I just have absolutely no idea what the announcers are saying.

The US has remaining group games against Poland on Tuesday and Brazil on Friday (Poland beat Brazil earlier today 1-0).

Match ended in a draw. US was thoroughly out played most of the match. Nobody aside from the US goalkeeper particularly stood out. The ref'ing was horrible though, I think it may have made some of the US defender hesitant in their tackles. The South Koreans dove like Italians & Mexicans most of the match and the ref bought nearly every one.

3 - 1 US at Halftime. Adu with 2 goals and Szetela with 1. If you haven't seen the highlights watch Zizzo's run on the last goal and watch the perfect placement of Adu's shot. Wow. Adu's play this match may have gotten him the European notice he desires!

Poland won their first game 1 - 0 over Brazil--and played 60+ minutes with only 10 men. Brazil and South Korea are next.

Not sure if anyone is even reading this(or cares) but....6 - 1 US, Adu with a hat trick, Szetela with 2 and Altidore with 1. Absolute, thorough, butt kicking, US outshot the Polish by like 10 shots. So with 4 points after 2 games(and +5 goal differential) it looks like the US is assured a place in the next round.

Brazil is up next on Friday and they didn't look special against 10 man Poland.

I've been reading your posts Zeno. Thanks for the updates during the match. Believe it or not, my computer at work is such a piece of crap that this is one of the only websites that doesn't make it freeze.
Anyways, I hope Adu continues to impress. I'm praying that he doesn't become another good/OK midfielder for the MNT like I'd been fearing and this makes our prospects for 2010 just a little bit brighter.
I wish I'd been able to see this game......stupid job!

3 goals by Adu in a 6-1 rout of Poland. NICE!

The other guy scored 2 goals and had the only goal last game. I say promote them. Better finishing skills than anyone on the national team for sure.

A win like that sure gives us hope for the future. Brazil beat South Korea 3-2 in the later game. A US win and they get first place in the group. A US draw gives them first place if Poland doesn't win against South Korea. A US loss will still get them through as long as they don't get trounced by Brazil (a +5 goal differential is HUGE).

As good as Szetela and Adu were in this game you have to give a ton of credit to Zizzo. I bet there will be at least 4 players that will be offered overseas contracts when this tourney is over (Adu, Szetela, Zizzo and possibly Sturgis and/or Beltran).

Wouldn't it be great to beat Brazil on Friday? Even at the U20 level it means something.

I've also been reading. Good to see Adu doing so well. Goalkeeper only gave up 2 goals in 2 games, huh? Nice.

Preview for US V Brazil, from FIFA.com

Brazil, USA neck and neck
With both Brazil and the USA needing the points to guarantee their passage from Group D into the Round of 16, the head-to-head between the two should be a thriller. Depending on the result, much will depend on the score of the other game in the group between Poland and Korea Republic. The Auriverdes have rediscovered their form but defensive lapses towards the end of their match against the South Koreans almost cost them dear. And they will have to make do without central defender David Marinho after he picked up a four-match suspension in that game. The Stars and Stripes meanwhile, go into the game in euphoric mood, after their 6-1 demolition of Poland.

The game
Brazil v United States, Ottawa, 6 July, 19.45 (local time)

The stakes
A place in the Round of 16, no less. With four points already in the bank, the Americans can feel relatively comfortable, and in the worst case scenario could even qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. However, the Canarinhos, with only three points, need a victory to be certain of advancing. Whatever happens though, the result of the other game will play a part in determining the final outcome of this very competitive group. With the USA possessing strength and pace up front, though less mobility at the back, and Brazil having bags of talent but some work to do in defence, the result looks too close to call.

The players
US defender Julian Valentin is sidelined with a split eyebrow that required stitches, and is not certain to be fit in time to face the Auriverdes. The Brazilians have no injury worries, but central defender David Marinho is suspended after elbowing Korea Republic's Young Rok Shin in their last game.

The birthdays
By strange coincidence, both teams will have a player celebrating his 20th birthday on the day of the game: Brazil's Edson and Nathan Sturgis of the USA. The Canarinhos will meanwhile be hoping to provide their coach Nelson Rodrigues with the ideal gift, as he is set to turn 42 the day after the match.

The past
These two nations are very familiar foes, having met nine times already in FIFA competitions. Not surprisingly, history clearly favours the South Americans, who have notched up eight victories and suffered just one defeat. Brazil have won all of their encounters at U-20 level, on each occasion by a margin of at least two goals. But with both teams unbeaten in the qualification tournament, their latest encounter should be closely fought.

The words
"This is a very difficult group. No two matches are the same, and all of them are tough. It goes without saying that Brazil will be hard to beat, but at the same time it's always a nice challenge to face the country who produce the best teams in the world." Thomas Rongen, USA coach.

"The American team is both technically gifted and athletic. It isn't going to be any easier than our previous two games, that's for sure. It will be a physical test and we'll need to be ready for it." Nelson Rodrigues, Brazil coach.

I guess due to the surprising popularity and demand for the event ESPN will be broadcasting tonights game, great news for anyone who doesn't have ESPNU like me. Sure will beat watching a foreign feed on the internet.

"USA ON ESPN: The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team is set to face Brazil in the third and final Group D match of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. ET from Frank-Clair Stadium in Ottawa, with a sold-out crowd of over 26,500 expected to be on hand for the double header as Argentina will battle North Korea at 5 p.m. ET. Friday’s game will be shown live on ESPN, ESPNU and Galavision, and fans can follow along on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker"

Unfortunately its not in HD, sure ESPN can show the stinking spelling bee in HD but not a soccer match?

That's good. I'll be watching. It's a very nice change from watching baseball almost every single day.

1 - 0 US, Altidore with a good shot.

Brazil outplayed the US the last 10 minutes of the half or so but overall its been pretty evenly matched. You can tell by how the Brazilian defenders are playing they respect the US speed up front.

Michael Bradley is being very disruptive in the midfield, breaking up a ton of Brazilian passes...but he still needs to learn how to shoot.

That Brazilian goal was all on Bradley, you never head a soft ball right back to the center of the field...stupid. Seitz did well just to block the first shot.

How about that!?!? We actually beat Brazil at any level in a major tournament.

Chris Seitz is awesome....Altidore and Adu played good as well.

I wasn't too impressed with Robbie Rogers this match though but no matter we win, win the group and most importantly avoid Argentina in the next round. Can't wait for the next round.

Are those games going to be on ESPN? Eh, probably will be doing too much in California to watch anyway. That was a great move by Adu to get past those defenders and two goals by Altidore is pretty impressive.

I caught the last fifteen minutes. I was impressed with our team, with an incredible effort to create the goal. Problem was, we then reverted to the status quo, idiotic U.S. small-country we're-not-good-enough bunker mentality, and started getting ripped to shreds. I blame coaching for this, and not the players. Yes, when you gain a lead at that point, you play defensive. NO, you do not sit on your heels and let the other team dictate play. If you are not playing aggressive, energetic defense, and simply sit back, you will get ripped. We are incredibly lucky it didn't net the Brazilians a goal.

Still, liked the play leading up to the goal. We won the group, didn't we? I'm excited!

I'm not going to question the coaches much in this one. Rongen made the subs he had to, defensive players for offensive players--with the exception of McCarty. Rogers wasn't effective in the second half and Altidore was completely spent and we had a gimpy GK--we had to protect Seitz. Rongen is the only US coach I can remember at any level who plays with 3 forwards...he tactically has the US on the attack more than is normal for a US team. Brazil outshot us by 11, he had to make a defensive adjustment to keep the quality of those chances down. Also I am sure he probably had the update that a draw would have been good enough for first place as well--with the way the Poland S. Korea match was going.

The Brazilians played good soccer but they have the problem our senior Nats do, they don't finish particularly well. They didn't manage a goal versus Poland who played with 10 men for over 60 minutes--the same team we shredded for 6.

Next game is on Monday against one of the third place teams from group B, E or F. Currently the only one we know for sure in third place is N. Korea in group E...otherwise it still up in the air in 3rd in B or F. We know we won't play Japan, Argentina, Czech Republic, Nigeria or Panama. We could play N. Korea(group E), Spain, Zambia, Jordan, Uruguay (Group B--a lot depends on their results), Costa Rica or Scotland (Group F).

The best news for us is the only way we would meet up with the strong Argentine team is in the final...Mexico too.

Things have kinda worked themselves out a little. Our next opponent is narrowed down to either N. Korea, Uruguay or the winner of Costa Rica V Scotland.

Oh and the next game isn't Monday like I said in a previous post but on Wednesday the 11th.
