Wow...I'm starting to think the UA football program is cursed...very sad indeed..my deepest condolenses to the family and the UA..

TOP U OF A RECRUIT DIES

The University of Arizona's prized football recruit collapsed on the practice field this afternoon and died, according to UA police. 18-year-old McCollins Umeh was at a voluntary practice at 1 PM this afternoon in 100-degree temperatures. He collapsed on the field and was rushed to University Medical Center in Tucson, where he died a short time later. Umeh, a defensive end from Klein Forest in Houston, was UA's top recruit.

This is really creepy after listening to Mike Jurecki on tv last night saying some of the Cardinals players didn't think they were getting enough water breaks. Obviously we don't know what the cause was today, but it's still scary to think about it.

Well if someone keep running these guys out there in this kind of heat, ths kind of stuff was bound to keep happening. I heard someone say once that an 18 wheeler can't run on mid-sized engine. With players getting bigger, stronger, and faster their bodies simply cannot handle all the extra pressure. The heat sure as hell doesn't help. 1pm practice in the middle of the summer makes no sense even if it was only light conditioning. It'll probably come out that the heat did not kill him (heat index was only about 91 or 92, Tucson is about 5-8 degrees cooler than Phx) but the point remains. I sincerely doubt Stoops gets canned or reprimanded for this as I don't believe coaches are allowed to be there during summer 'voluntary' workouts. But at the same time, maybe coaches being there would help the situation. I doubt coaches would schedule 1pm practices as they wouldn't want to be out in that heat. Denny needs to remove his head from you know where with this situation. One guy already died on his watch, we sure as hell don't need it happening again.

I can't understand why they don't start practices at 6:00 am or after 6:00 pm.

Because games are not played at 6pm. If we are playing 3 hour games at 105+ temps then we better be practicing in it. But if the players want more water breaks give them some water...

Hopefully this opens eyes with DG about giving more water breaks.

They are getting plenty of water. This "report" by local radio talk guys is based on trying to dig up a story in the most boring time of the sports year.

MJ doesn't work for the Cardinals, he just has very good access as a reporter for KDUS.

The workout was a very light workout, as they said on the radio. Very little heavy physical activity.

Poor guy.

Jurecki IS employed by the Cardinals too. He does not write those articles on the official website for free.

NFL is the only organisation that has banned ephedra (because of Korey Stringer's death), which should significantly lower the risk of strokes and dehydration.

I'm not an expert, but I believe ephadra speeds up the metobolism, hense increasing the risk of dehydration.

Earth to DG - I realize it's important to set a badass tone for this football team, but this ain't Palo Alto or Mankato; we're talking about the Desert. Heat sneaks up on you, and proper hydration principles must be adhered to if we're to avert another tragedy.

Note - This isn't just a Denny thing. Remember when Gene Stallings expressed amazement at the need for "more water breaks" (that's what he called it back then) after several practices in the Valley.

People outside the area just don't know.

When referring to UA, more games are played at night, usually around 7pm, than during the day, so practice should be played at night too. But since these are player organized workouts, it doesn't surprise me that theie practices took place during the day because kids that age want to sleep in and have their nights off.

I agree totally about taking the heat seriously, etc.

But, you guys are assuming it's heat related. From what little information we have, it does NOT sound like heat stroke to me. Let's see what the medical examiner finds out. I think it's very probable he had a heart condition.

MJ works for KDUS, now he may also have a part time gig/contract to write an article occasionaly but he isn't on the Cardinals staff. Chrissy does work full time for the Cardinals.

I'm not sure where the "water break" comment came from it sounds a little like complaints that practice is a lot harder now.

The reason I say this is that there is water available all over the practice field. I see players stopping to get water all the time and I've never seen any coach complain.

What I don't see is practice stop to allow them to group around the water coolers and chat. That happened a lot past year. This year they have to grab water between drills.

Preliminary report says Umeh had an enlarged heart and that heat did not play a factor in his death.

MJ is employed as the Cardinals Insider and receives a paycheck.

But, he gets paid to other things like...be a sports talk show host.

It is a slow time of the year and all local talk shows are really digging for anything this time of year.

If you are a season ticket holder, take a tour yourself to see all the water available. Maybe you can enjoy a cool glass yourself!
