It's certainly possible it's the shoes, but I'm a bit skeptical for one reason, rumors have been rampant for months now that UCLA is going to switch to Nike from Adidas, and the primary reason why is Neuheisel. UCLA is an Adidas school, and that was instrumental in them getting Howland. Much as I hate Sonny Vaccaro he helped cut the deal to get Howland to UCLA.
So they'd have to have some pretty conclusive evidence the shoes were injuring players to switch.
I personally hate Nike but I wish UCLA would switch, first off there are a ton of kids who for whatever reason grow up loving Nike, I have no doubt not being a NIKE school hurts in recruiting at times. Second, it'd be a hell of a lot easier to get good UCLA gear if they were a Nike school, Adidas just doesn't seem to market nearly as well.
