UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger was named a potential Day 2 NFL draft fit for the Indianapolis Colts by Pro Football Network.

This isn't the first time either that we've seen Schwesinger named as a good fit for the Colts. ESPN's Jordan Reid also recently paired Schwesinger with the Colts in a recent article.

Schwesinger proved to be an extremely reliable tackler last season, making 133 of his 144 attempts. In coverage, he allowed a completion rate of 77% at 9.4 yards per catch with two interceptions and two pass breakups, according to PFF.

"He possesses elite instincts, and while he’s not an explosive athlete, he plays fast," wrote PFN. "Schwesinger projects as a WILL linebacker at the next level, and he should be able to step in and compete with Jaylon Carlies for the starting spot next to Zaire Franklin right away."

With the Colts likely looking to add to the linebacker spot, versatility is an important element at the second and third levels of Lou Anarumo's defense, not to mention that added coverage ability next to Zaire Franklin should be coveted as well.

As noted by Pro Football Network, the Colts need to find a new starter at the linebacker position with EJ Speed now in Houston. On the roster already, perhaps second-year linebacker Jaylon Carlies can fill that role. GM Chris Ballard mentioned recently that he believes Carlies is a player who can "really ascend" in Year 2.

However, the Colts shouldn't assume that will happen either. Following the end of the 2024 season, Ballard mentioned that he wanted to infuse competition throughout the roster to help raise the level of play.

That concept should very much apply to the linebacker position when it comes to finding out who is going to start next to Zaire Franklin. In the past, particularly in 2024, we saw how a lack of competition throughout the roster impacted the overall play.

“Instead of really creating competition throughout and throwing new blood into the locker room, new players into the locker room, I said ‘you know what, we’re gonna run it back,’” Ballard said after the season of his roster-building approach in 2024. “That was a mistake.”
