I've tried my best to answer my own question, I've researched past threads , but alas, I am coming to my ASFN friends for help because you are all smarter than I am.

Here is the issue:

My mom had Cox high speed internet and only one computer. I now have my own computer at home and need to connect to the internet. We have Cox's cable modem, but only one spot to connect ethernet cords (which is connected to my mom's computer)

What is the best route of getting internet to my computer?

Backstory: I called Cox, and some moron there said YES, the cable modem transmits wireless. So I go buy a wireless card and install that into my computer. What happens? No internet (except for my neighbor's). Before I did that, I went to Fry's Electronics and the nice guy there said NO Cox's cable modem does not transmit wireless.

So I buy Netgear's RangeMax Wireless router (80 bucks.. which im thinking now is too much). I havent opened it yet, but I am thinking if I plug that into the cable modem it will work and all will be well with the world.

There are two things I'm looking for:
1) Best security.. wireless is kind of freaking me out a bit
2) Little difficutly - I wouldn't mind just running a huge cord from my room to a router.

:help:

Hey Kate,

Ryan or SirChaz are the gurus on this.

As far as connection, Cox cable can support wireless, but you do need a router to broadcast - it is not native in the Cable Modem.

Your router should come with an additional ethernet cable. Hook the ethernet cable from your cable modem into the router, then use the new cable to connect the router to your mom's computer.

I only use linksys routers, so I don't know how netgear works. But you definately want to secure it. It is a little complicated but not too bad. Basically you want to turn off SSID broadcast, limit the number of connections, etc.

Good thread on this here:

No - go wireless if you use the router. I use it every day with no problem.

OKay, limit SSID broadcast and limit the number of connections. I think I can do it.

Thanks for the help and the suggestion on going wireless.

That's what we did. Bought a NetGear wireless router for our desktop computer to transmit to a wireless laptop) It's was a pain getting it all configured but works like a charm.

BTW, I love this router, it is totally powerful. I can get a strong single from the park that is a good distance from my house. I can take my son to play on the swings while daddy is on ASFN

You're not being annoying. I just suggested it because it worked really well for me. :)

WPA is much better security and easier IMO. Just as long as you have some security it will keep the leeches out.

Just use a good long passphrase and make sure your wireless adapter will support whatever encryption you use. As long as both ends use the same type you will be fine.

Not a bad choice on the router. Netgear is a good brand.

Get this figured out? I use the same netgear rangemax and looove it. Like Ryan said I can pick up this signal outside and down the street. I have a non-wireless PC hooked up to it and my wireless laptop. Set-up is easy and they walk you through it during setup

You bet, everything is all up and running. I've secured it and all that fun stuff, as other people suggested.

I've had nothing but excellent connectivity.
