Jackson on an Ultimate LOTR DVD Collection
Source: USA Today
January 14, 2005

USA Today spoke with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy director Peter Jackson on the set of King Kong where he revealed that they still want to develop an Ultimate "Lord of the Rings" DVD Collection.

The set will included the three extended versions (not combined into one film) and likely won't arrive in stores for another two or three years.

"I don't want to add more footage," Jackson says. "There's as much in there as we want. Eventually you are just going to go backward and weaken the films." Instead, he would prefer to simply show the unused deleted scenes and explain why they were cut.

Jackson would also like to include feature-lenght documentaries, made by longtime associate Costa Botes, on the making of the movies. "There are no commentary or interviews. It's like a reality TV show," Jackson says.

He adds that the bloopers, or "bleepers" as Jackson calls them, would also be a new feature. They were previously only shown to the major cast members as a farewell tribute after they finished filming.

Very cool news! I'll definitely be picking that up someday. He did an amazing job with the whole set. I might not agree with all of his decisions (like excluding the Scouring of the Shire), but, heck, I sure wasn't the one who devoted years of my life to making the thing, so I guess I'll let him have his way. :) 95% perfect is certainly a lot better than no movie at all!

I know this is sacrilege, but in spite of the fact that LOTR is in 3 books, he should have made 4 films..... Then he could have been more accurate and complete in his film (all in my perfect little world, of course... :D ).

when he originally pitched the idea to New Line they were in financial trouble - so his original idea was based on two movies. New Line said - no, we want 3 movies, 1 per book.

at the time New Line was struggling so it's amazing that they got any funding for the three that they made to begin with. LOTR saved New Line in a major way.

They put a lot on the line 'cause if the first one had flopped, the second two had already been filmed and would've had very little chance to be seen. I am beyond glad they stuck their necks out. New Line, Jackson, the cast for filming overseas two years...everyone!

Just watched the extended ROTK tonight (again). Whatta movie!

yeah - they did something no other movie had done in the industry as well and that was make theaters commit upfront to showing all three movies before they were released. the theater owners took a huge gamble as well.

extended editions rock!!!

These movies were beyond incredible. And I didn't even see these until about a month ago. All 3 of these blew me away and will forever be my #1 movies of all time. Now I wish I had seen them when they came out so I could have the experience of seeing them on a very large screen. I have already ordered the 12 disc package and can not wait for it to get here.
