The 2024-25 UNC basketball season is in the books, and with that, it's time for our player season reviews for the campaign.

We're continuing our review with James Brown. Coming into Chapel Hill as a 4-star center from Link Academy in Branson, Mo., Brown played sparingly in his freshman season.

North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis struggled with finding consistent production from his big men early in the year, rotating between Jalen Washington and Ven-Allen Lubin. Brown saw action in just 18 games, playing a season-high six minutes during the Tar Heels' road finale at Virginia Tech.

Hubert is no stranger to shrinking his rotation, but there's no reason for Brown to play as little as he did Year One in Chapel Hill.

2024-25 stats: 1.2 points, 0.8 rebounds, 71.4 percent field goal shooting in 18 games.

When James Brown actually saw game action for the Tar Heels, we saw glimpses of his potential, highlighted by his rebounding ability.

Brown had several memorable games, most recently against Notre Dame in UNC's ACC Tournament opener. In just three bench minutes, Brown scored two points and grabbed a season-high four rebounds.

Brown's season-high in points came against La Salle back in December, when he dropped six during North Carolina's 93-67 victory.

With Jalen Washington in the transfer portal and Ven-Allen Lubin the only other center on UNC's roster, Brown has a larger role carved out for him during the 2025-2026 college basketball season. But first he must develop.

The former three-star recruit has the size for a post presence and the coaching staff does like the tools that he has to his game. However, there were times this season where he looked completely overmatched on the floor.

A big Summer in terms of adding some muscle and working on his game should help Brown. He has the chance to earn more minutes moving forward especially with UNC needing some help in the post. If he can get better over the Summer and take a step forward, his role should be a lot bigger next season.

The Tar Heels are exploring options in the portal at center but even with that, there should be a role for Brown.
