BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The hunt for a scrunchie source is on for the UNC women's basketball team as the Tar Heels prep for their Sweet 16 matchup against Duke on Friday.
Following the Tar Heels’ second-round March Madness win over West Virginia, a Dean Dome security guard handed the team a batch of handmade Carolina-blue scrunchies. The scrunchies came from a fan, but the security guard didn’t know which one.
“I’m sure we do know her,” freshman guard Jordan Zubich said. “We’ve probably seen her and given her high fives.”

The players loved the gesture and want to thank the fan personally. They plan to wear the scrunchies against Duke, in hopes that the crafter will come forward.
“I don’t know if everybody will (wear them) because some people are superstitious about which pony tail they wear,” Zubich said of her teammates.
Zubich led the call to action in a video the players made Friday for the Heels’ Instagram page, asking the UNC faithful to help find the fan. The Heels know their fans are tight-knit and, with the right shares, they can properly thank the person who gifted them the scrunchies.
UNC fans showed out for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, with nearly 10,000 fans across both games packing the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
“Our fans mean the world to us,” Zubich said. “If they’re watching here or on the TV, we just really appreciate and love them.”
The Tar Heels — and the scrunchies — tip off against the Blue Devils at 2:30 p.m. ET Friday with a spot in the Elite Eight on the line.
