Apr. 14—GRAND FORKS — The UND women's basketball team will now be bringing in two starters from Minnesota's Class AAAA state champions.
Hopkins 5-foot-10 guard London Harris committed to new UND women's basketball coach Dennis Hutter recently, giving the Hawks a pair of Hopkins prospects coming to campus.
Harris had collected a number of Division I offers including Albany, Detroit Mercy, UMBC, Dartmouth and College of Charleston.
"In the beginning of the recruiting process, it started with all offers from the East Cost and the South," Harris said. "I was looking more closer to home."
Harris finished with 11 points in the Minnesota AAAA state title game this winter to lead Hopkins to a state title. Prep Girls Hoops named Harris the state's defensive player of the year.
"Once we started talking to UND, they were saying all the things I like and it fit my playing style of playing fast, sharing the ball and using the actions I played with in high school," Harris said. "It was also an accepting program. The girls were very nice. All the coaches I met on the visit were nice, honest and genuine."
UND will be adding Harris' Hopkins teammate Lauren Hillesheim, who committed to UND in August of 2024. Hillesheim scored 10 points in the state championship game.
Hillesheim's dad, David Hillesheim, was a two-time all-North Central Conference performer and team captain for UND football from 1992-95.
"It was a little bit of coincidence," Harris said. "I was interested in (UND), and I kind of forgot (Hillesheim) was committed there. But it'll be nice to have someone I know."
Harris described her style as speed and slash.
"I do a little of everything," Harris said. "I have a decent pull-up and 3-point range. I mostly get my points from running the floor. People say I'm fast. I get a lot of points from picking off passes and disrupting."
New UND head coach Dennis Hutter continues to revamp the Hawks' roster following the departure of eight players this offseason that led to the resignation of former head coach Mallory Bernhard.
Since taking over, Hutter, who was associate head coach last season for UND after a 19-year run at NAIA Mayville State, has secured commitments from Harris, Kansas State transfer Finley Ohnstad and SC Upstate transfer Ava Miller.
All three players have Minnesota ties with Ohnstad coming out of Lakeville South and Miller coming from Rochester Mayo.
