Paperwork on the Diamondbacks' proposed trade of Randy Johnson to the New York Yankees for right-hander Javier Vazquez, prospects and cash is expected to be in the hands of Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday.

A baseball official said Friday that the documents had yet to arrive at the commissioner's office in New York.

According to the Associated Press, both teams completed the paperwork Friday but would wait to deliver it until after the holiday weekend.

Selig, who spends a lot of time in the Valley, has been vacationing in Arizona, the official said, and was not expected back until Monday.

The trade is subject to Selig's approval, because more than $1 million is changing hands.

As part of the reported deal for the 41-year-old left-hander, the Diamondbacks will collect between $8.5 million and $9 million from the Yankees.

In addition to Vazquez, the Diamondbacks will receive left-hander Brad Halsey and catcher Dioner Navarro.

Whether the Diamondbacks are finished dealing is open to interpretation. They could use a combination of players to try to lure Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green and/or Brad Penny, two of the principals in the aborted, three-team trade last month that included the Yankees.

Keeping Navarro could create a logjam at catcher, given that fellow catchers Koyie Hill, Chris Snyder and Robby Hammock occupy spots on the 40-man roster. The Dodgers are thought to have an interest in Navarro.

In addition to Selig's approval, the proposed trade hinges on a few other things:

• Johnson, who has a no-trade clause, has to approve the deal. That appears to be an easy hurdle to clear, because Johnson is widely believed to have requested a trade, but only to the Yankees.

• A contract extension for Johnson must be worked out, and the Yankees have the option of asking for a 72-hour negotiating window. This could push the approval of the proposed trade well into next week. According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees want to add two years to Johnson's contract at $16 million a season. Johnson's current deal runs through 2005.

• All of the involved players have to pass physicals.
