Universal has rebranded their "monster" universe as "Dark Universe". Pretty good trailer for it, even though it's all footage from the classics. REALLY impressed by the remastering on the older titles like Dracula.

Casting so far:
Tom Cruise in The Mummy
Russell Crowe is Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde
Javier Bardem is in Bride of Frankenstein (as Dr. Frankenstein?)
Johnny Depp is The Invisible Man
NOT SURE: Luke Evans as Dracula (movie failed badly, and I haven't heard if they are still including Untold in the Universe)

Stupid name. "Dark Universe"? Sounds like it belongs in some alternate time line.

Ugh, that Mummy movie brings in two of the members? I have little interest in this.
What a strange statement. You have little interest because Mummy brings in the Mummy and Dr. Jeckyll? That's weird. I get having no interest because you a) don't like Tom Cruise, or b) don't like shallow action movies (not saying that's what it is, but it certainly could be), but because it's introducing two of the characters in the universe? Just odd.

Actually, you forgot:

Sofia Boutello as The Mummy

I don't mind Universal reusing these classic properties. I am excited about some of this. I just thought the "name" was dumb. Lot's of acting power in some of these roles.

Not exactly in the same stratosphere as the others.

Well, it is a universe dealing with their classic monsters. Unless there is some twist and Cruise is The Mummy, she is the classic character.

I have a feeling that may happen. The trailer does imply he has some immortality, after all.

Ah, I was way too vague, and you got me on it. I don't think the Mummy looks good at all, and it's the big intro for several characters. To me, that doesn't bode well. Good job keeping me on my toes, Chap :)

The first installment "The Mummy" is getting scathing reviews. Some are calling it the worst Tom Cruise movie to date.

Reading through some of them, it appears the studios "Dark Universe" world building completely ruined the movie. The movie tried so hard to setup the "Dark Universe" that anchored the movie like a dead weight.

Probably not a good sign for things to come.

When a horror movie fulfills all of my worst fears--yet not because of the movie--it's not a good sign ;)

Actually I really dug the studio idea and concept of creating a cohesive universe. I still think it's a smart idea. However, instead of taking a clue from Marvel and let those stories be self contained with organic links, it appears the studio was heavy handed in trying to jam the baseline for that universe into a single film.

It's unfortunate IMO because I could dig a Marvel type universe but with the classic monsters.

It is a great idea, but they're going DC style instead of Marvel style, and it is killing them. Especially given how putrid and unoriginal their big kickoff movie looks.

Written by too many people and tied like an anchor to the idea of setting up the universe instead of just giving us a good mummy movie which happens to be inside a monster-themed universe.

Side characters that were either plain annoying or wasted.

Most really enjoyed the Mummy herself, but said the film felt like several pieced together (likely a result of several writers).

Two Youtube critics I enjoy watching rated it a "C" and "It would be a better movie if I were drunk."
