The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects who the Green Bay Packers could select in the 2025 NFL draft.

There is no such thing as too many pass rushers and the Green Bay Packers could use another edge rusher or two to pair with Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness.

A potential target on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft is Barryn Sorrell. The Texas defensive end checks in at No. 22 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

A native of Louisiana, Sorrell recorded 44 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks during his sophomore season in 2022. The following season, Sorrell recorded five tackles for loss and four sacks. This past season, Sorrell recorded 44 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

"Sorrell came into the season last year as an on-field leader," CJ Vogel, a reporter for On Texas Football, said. "He was a player the younger guys looked up to and was consistently able to showcase his value by leading from the front."

Sorrell is a sturdy run defender. He sets a firm edge and isn't going to get bullied off his spot. He has strong hands and is able to snatch and toss with the best of them. The Texas defensive end has the lateral quickness to slither past offensive tackles and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Over the past three seasons, he's recorded 66 run stops.

"He’s best in run support off the edge," Vogel said. "Sorrell is great at shedding blocks and strong enough to hold the point of attack on the edge even if he doesn’t initially beat his man."

Sorrell sees red as a pass rusher and plays with relentless energy and effort. Sorrell has an adequate first step off the edge and when he showcases his closing burst. He rushes with good pad level and converts speed to power to cave in the pocket. There are little wasted movements in his pass rush plan. This past season, he recorded a career-high 49 pressures and finished the past three seasons with 121.

"Pass rush is where Sorrell will need to show the most growth in the NFL," Vogel said. "One major positive for his game is that for four years, he was an effort leader and guy you couldn’t take off the field due to what he would give you from that perspective.

Sorrell put together a strong week of practice in Mobile at the Senior Bowl. The Texas defensive end was named the top defensive linemen on the American roster. Green Bay's defensive quality control coach led the American defensive line group in Mobile and got a first-hand look at Sorrell all week.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Sorrell ran a 4.68 40-yard dash and 1.65 10-yard split. He also clocked a 4.36 short shuttle and a 7.06 3-cone. Those numbers back up why the Texas defensive end was No. 79 on Bruce Feldman's Annual Freaks list.

From Feldman:

"The 6-4, 260-pound senior clocked one of the fastest max velocity times of any D-lineman in college football last fall when he hit 19.4 mph during a game. Texas coaches are excited for Sorrell to take his game to another level after he had a terrific offseason. Sorrell bench pressed 425 pounds, squatted 575 and power cleaned 355, but coaches say the most impressive number is his explosive burst for his size. He consistently has registered 20 mph on the Catapult system."

Fit with the Packers

Sorrell is a ready-made run defender. He's stout at the point of attack and showcased a knack for making plays behind the line of scrimmage. With his athleticism and relentlessness, he could carve out a role in Green Bay's defensive end rotation as a rookie.

"This is a guy who comes in and competes with anyone and at anytime," Vogel said. "Looking no further than getting on the field as a freshman at Texas and receiving defensive line MVP accolades in a stacked room while at the Senior Bowl in Mobile this winter. He gives it his all and plays with a huge chip on his shoulder."

If the Packers miss out on a pass rusher in the first three rounds, Sorrell could be an ideal target early on Day 3 of the draft.

Behind Gary and Van Ness, the Packers have Kingsley Enagbare, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract and Brenton Cox Jr, who flashed during his second year in the league.

Given the current state of the depth chart, it would not be shocking to see the Packers use multiple picks at a premium position.

While Sorrell may not check the length thresholds (less than 34-inch arms), he checks all the other boxes, and the Packers may be willing to bend those marks when it comes to a Day 3 pick.

The former Longhorn plays with an attacking mindset and a relentless motor. Couple those things with his athleticism, and he has the makings of a solid rotational edge rusher. Getting that type of player in the fourth or fifth round would be tremendous value for a team thirsty for help at defensive end.
