U.S. MNT To Participate in 2007 Copa America in Venezuela
U.S. To Make First Appearance Since 1995

Winners of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the U.S. will play in the Gold Cup and Copa America in 2007.

CHICAGO (October 30, 2006) — The United States Men's National Team has accepted an invitation to compete in the 2007 Copa America, the regional championship of South America. The 12-team tournament will run from June 26 to July 15 in nine cities across Venezuela. For the United States, the appearance will mark their third entrance into CONMEBOL’s signature event. The draw to determine the groupings is expected to be held early next year.

“We are delighted to be able to accept the offer to play in Copa America,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “The tournament offers the dual advantage of quality opponents and a challenging environment that will provide long-term benefits for our team. In order to continue our progress at the international level, it is critical that we are able to expose our team to competition at the highest level.”

The U.S. is competing in the biennial event for the first time since 1995, when a 3-0 defeat of defending champion Argentina and a quarterfinal victory against Mexico helped lift the USA to an impressive fourth-place finish in Uruguay. Despite falling 1-0 to Brazil in the semifinals, U.S. midfielder John Harkes joined Uruguay captain Enzo Francescoli as co-MVP of the tournament. The USA’s only other appearance in the competition came in 1993 in Ecuador.

The first phase of the tournament consists of three groups of four teams each that compete in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place teams, advance to the knockout phase. Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela have been designated to head the three groups.

Copa America is the second international tournament in which the U.S. will compete next summer, and will begin just a few days after the USA tries to defend their title against 11 other teams at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scheduled from June 6-24 in several cities across the United States.

In 2005, the USA became the first team in history to reach the Gold Cup finals five times, capturing their third regional crown by defeating Panama in penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw in regulation. Along the route to their third Gold Cup championship, the U.S. extended their record-setting 19-match unbeaten run in group play, while DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan and Oguchi Onyewu were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Awesome news! If the USMNT ever wants to become a respectable group internationally, they will need to compete in more events like this. This is a big first step.

awesome! Who will coach?

Latest news from Gulati..."We have not made any decision about who will be coaching our national team, we certainly have not made any offers to anyone to coach our national team, and we certainly have not made the offers along the lines that have been mentioned in various publications. That is as clear as I can be on it. Further, I said a couple or three weeks ago is still the case. We are being very respectful of two or three different things, one of which is that most of the people we are talking to are coaching teams currently. Some of that is changing as the MLS playoffs wind down, but at least in a couple of cases internationally we are talking to people that are involved in coaching and it is a process that for a lot of different reasons needs to remain private. We aren’t prepared to say who those candidates are. We haven’t made any decisions yet. I am still very hopeful and expect that we will announce a coach in November. It will not be in the first half of November, it was never the intention to do it in the first half of November because of MLS Cup. The following week is Thanksgiving, so if it falls into the first week of December I am not going to lose any sleep but it’s our intention still to make that announcement in November.”

WTF??? First of all, we should NOT be considering domestic coaches...that was enough to build the program, but not to take it to the next level. Second of all...um, well, it's been 4 months...how about we actually make an offer to a coach, and then even hire one! We can't move forward at all as a program until that is done. Sheesh!

I'm hoping we do not offer a contract to a US Coach--I like Bob Bradley but I'm not sure if he is ready for such a responsibility...also his son is going to be a big part of the teams future and I don't care for the father/son angle--makes for excuses and unfounded speculation.

I definitely don't like Frank Yallop--he isn't an American--he's Canadian and if I am going foreign I am going for a coach from a well respected world power. Also Bradley is a better coach than Yallop.
