US TO MEET DENMARK IN JANUARY
Mark Flannery for Yanks Abroad Wednesday, November 15, 2006

The United States now have an international match on the schedule with Denmark set to pay a visit to the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles in the new year.

While teams in Europe have been played two or three European Cup qualifying matches, the United States will have been idle for almost six months when they face the 1992 European Champions on January 20th, having bowed out to Ghana in their final World Cup game last June.

Denmark will be making their second trip to the soccer specific stadium, having helped the US inaugurate play there in 2004. The match finished in a 1-1 draw, giving the United States their first ever result in four tries against the Scandinavians.

The match will be far from a stern test for the boys in Red, White and Blue with Denmark planning on bringing over only players from their domestic league.

Having recently accepted an invitation to participate in the biennial Copa América for the first time since 1995, the match versus Denmark will be the first in a series of games that figures to make up one of the tougher non-World Cup years in recent memory.

With the Copa América and CONCACAF's own Gold Cup running back-to-back, the US may need to have two national teams ready to play during the summer months.

Despite announcing the match, US Soccer has yet to name a head coaching replacement for longtime team manager Bruce Arena, who was let go following the team's dire World Cup showing in Germany.
