Michigan State hockey is a common pick to reach the Frozen Four for the USA TODAY crew, with some even having the Spartans' win the whole thing in the end.

With the college hockey NCAA Tournament set to begin on Thursday, USA TODAY released their Frozen Four and National Championship predictions from various writers across the country. Here's a quick breakdown of how the four writers (Mike Brehm, Helene St. James, Nathaniel Bott and Craig Meyer) have it playing out for the Spartans in the NCAA Tournament:

  • All four of the writers have Michigan State coming out of the Toledo Region and reaching the Frozen Four for the first time since 2007
  • Three of the four have Michigan State winning its Frozen Four matchup against Maine out of the Allentown Region and advancing to the National Championship game
  • One of the four writers has Michigan State losing to Boston College in the National Championship game
  • Two of the four writers have Michigan State beating Boston College to win the program's first National Championship since 2007

St. James and Bott -- who happen to both write for Michigan-based newspapers -- are the two that have Michigan State winning the title in the end. Here's what they each had to say in their predictions:

"Spartans should swagger into the tournament after their double-overtime victory over Ohio State to claim the Big Ten trophy. Between Isaac Howard’s dominance with the puck and Trey Augustine (a Red Wings draft pick) delivering outstanding performances in net, the Spartans looked poised to celebrate college hockey’s top prize." - St. James

"Michigan State has a favorable regional in nearby Toledo to get to St. Louis. And with goaltender Trey Augustine and Hobey Baker finalist Isaac Howard carrying the load, the Spartans will win their fourth title in program history." - Bott

Michigan State hockey officially begins the NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening against Cornell. That matchup between the Spartans and Big Red is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. ET and will be available to watch on ESPN+.
