Although the 2025 MLB season technically began in Tokyo last week, the season really kicks off with Opening Day Thursday. 28 of the 30 MLB teams will be in action, including nationally televised games featuring both of last year's World Series participats: the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees.
This year, just one USC baseball alum will open the season on an active MLB roster. However, several more will start the year either on the Injured List or in Triple-A as a potential call-up candidate.
Here are some notable USC names to watch this baseball season:
Nootbaar is the lone Trojan to open the 2025 season on an active roster. The outfielder appeared in 109 games for the St. Louis Cardinals last year, batting .244 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs.
Stubbs spent the past three years as the No. 2 catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, behind J.T. Realmuto. However, he was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to begin the 2025 season.
Hurt made three pitching appearances for the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024. However, he underwent Tommy John surgery last July, and will likely miss all of 2025.
After making six appearances on the mound on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, Gilbert was traded to the Chicago White Sox. Like Hurt, however, he will begin the season on the IL with an undisclosed injury.
Sabol appeared in 110 games as a utility player for the San Francisco Giants in 2023. However, he appeared in just 11 games at the major league level last season, and was traded to the Boston Red Sox during the offseason. Sabol did not make the team's Opening Day roster, and will likely begin the season with Triple-A Worcester.
In addition to the players, there are numerous major league coaches who played at USC. Headlining the group are New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone and Los Angeles Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior.
