I claimed it was about what drives eyeballs.
I'm trying to find data on viewership for Pac programs comparatively, but that's not coming up on a simple google search. I'm curious to see if it's mostly static year to year, and the comparative #'s on football vs. basketball and how much of an impact success has on viewership.

I thought all would be well though if they didn’t take the Big 12 deal??? Karpman is as plugged into ASU and NCAA athletics as anyone out there so he realizes the obvious truth in that missing this train is an essential death sentence.

This has gotta be a tough pill for Michael Crow to swallow in multiple ways.
You’re assuming that Crow cares about athletics enough to be upset about what’s going on

It's really hard to find an apples to apples comparison. It really depends on the time and especially the channel. If you try to control for those factors you get really small sample sizes that aren't worth much.

That's a pretty fair point.

It's short sided at such a large institution where athletics can be a big pull

My university is decent sized for a private school. We haven't had football since the 70s. Going back 20 years ago many sports were converted to club level.

Basketball would occasionally flare up and have a decent year. Popular sport in campus and a popular sport in the city with a number of solid and better programs

A lot of focus on capital projects - not just expanding/improving campus buildings, but also hotel development, general redevelopment off campus, etc.

They did make some upgrades to the fields used for things like soccer and lacrosse a little off campus, but not anything nice.

There was a lot of talk about improving the basketball facilities. The gym is in the general physical education and facilities building - pull out bleachers and everything. Curtains separating that court from the side rec courts.

Some plans were really nice.

Ultimately, the university invested in squash and squash facilities and will host major squash tournaments, etc

The president just doesn't seem to really care that much.

Miami had something similar under Shalala. She thought the football program overshadowed what she was trying to present for academics and any support to athletics was almost begrudging.

Pro sports are making it easier to watch the games you want and colleges are making it harder.

With all the changes in conferences, NIL and streaming, it's getting harder to get excited about college sports and players.

Like a good television program or movie, one needs to care about the characters. College sports is losing this.

I believe improvements to the basketball arena were shelved with the assumption they would be sliding into the new Coyotes arena down the road on Rio Salado. I think everyone assumed that would be approved and its rejection caught a lot of people flat-footed. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, I can see that.

My bar is pretty low with the mid major gyms I've been into, but WFA doesn't seem all that bad

Desert Financial Arena is obsolete and definitely represents a low bar by Pac 12/Big 12 standards. It's not a great experience and the setting doesn't help with recruiting either. But to Crow, it is "completely functional."

I agree. Updated locker room and training facilities are absolutely essential to attract top athletes, not to mention the other items mentioned in the article.

Ask the Suns.

It's crazy that Mullett wasn't built for a basketball configuration in addition to hockey. Did no one pay attention to what went on with AWA?

Not large enough capacity to host men's basketball. I imagine they could fit it with flexible seating to surround a court, but it still wouldn't be large enough for men's b-ball. I'm pretty sure they had plans to renovate DS arena, but they dropped them when it looked like the Coyotes arena was going in.

This is just the dumbest drama of all time...why on earth would anyone stay, and why will it take U of A dipping for ASU to move?

The answer is the hubris of Michael Crow.

Karpman and others seem to be pointing the finger in the same direction. The funny part is, the disaster that is Ray Anderson is apparently advocating for the Big 12. Bizarro world.

I never subscribed to the PAC-12 Network to watch games. The same may apply if ASU goes the streaming route.

Television revenue should be about making the games readily available for the fans.

I wish new Suns owner Mat Ishbia could talk to these people.

Yeah. That's not going to work if true. I think 25-30 could have, but 20 million is just not going to cut it.

All streaming that would be an add-on to AppleTV+ sounds unworkable for casuals.
I thought money was not a problem.

I don't even know if ASU has been offered to move to the Big-12, but if they have, it would be foolish not to follow Arizona.
