USC coach Pete Carroll says the NCAA can have two of his timeouts from Saturday's crosstown rivalry game with UCLA. He just wants his players to wear their home colors.

Carroll said on Monday that the Trojans would wear their cardinal red home jerseys on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. That violates an NCAA rule that requires visiting teams to wear white, and the infraction will cost him two timeouts, one per half.
The last time the Trojans and the Bruins both wore home jerseys -- the Trojans in red, the Bruins in blue and gold -- was in 1982, when the schools shared the Los Angeles Coliseum. "I just thought it was a really cool tradition," Carroll said. As for losing timeouts? "I don't care about it right now," Carroll said. "I think it's the fun thing to do, and I think the fans will appreciate it over time."

Carroll said the decision to wear home jerseys is not meant as a sign of disrespect to UCLA, adding that he discussed restoring the tradition with former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell and with current coach Rick Neuheisel. "It's exciting," Neuheisel said. "I think wearing the home jerseys is a great tradition." In the meantime, the Pacific-10 Conference has forwarded a request to NCAA football rules committee secretary Rogers Redding, seeking to change the rule. Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said he expected to a decision by Tuesday.

Interesting, obviously USC is so much better that Pete is assuming he won't need the timeouts. It would be funny if it backfired but I expect a game much more like the 66-19 game than the 13-9 game the following year.

I do think Pete has a point, both teams should be able to wear home colors.

People will call me crazy but I read years ago the reason they stopped doing that was with all the gang problems in LA, they didn't like the idea of having USC in red(Bloods) against UCLA in blue(crips). They used to both wear home colors, sounds like the Pac 10 is considering allowing it again which would be fine with me.

Russ, I still can't believe you like BOTH Cal and UCLA. You might be the first.

Apparently, UCLA stole Cal's mascot and colors. According to at least two Cal alums I know.

I don't really follow UCLA in football closely, just basketball. IN football I'm more a cal fan. I grew up an Oklahoma fan until the whole Barry Switzer circus blew up in their faces, because of where I live I sort of gravitated to Cal.

My HS stole the Stanford fight song so I'm not too concerned with stealing from other schools! :D

I just thought this was an interesting story in that it would be so ironic if losing the timeouts wound up costing USc the game, but I expect they'll win by 40.

A complete class move by Neuheisel. He said that UCLA will call a timeout immediately after USC is assessed with the penalty for wearing the home jerseys to even it up. I think this is great and it is awesome to see both sides embrace this old tradition.

yeah I agree, not often you see the words class and Neuheisel in the same sentence but maybe he actually has changed.

the NCAA said USC will only lose one timeout, so UCLA will take one just to even it up.

This is good old-fashioned one-upmanship in college football. Like it.
