I just got an Xbox 360 but only have one ethernet cable leading into my room. I am not paying 100 bucks for the wireless 360 adapter so I was wondering if i could patch the connection through my PC. Ryan? Is this possible with a second ethernet card?

Why not just get a $15 hub?

Yes you can just bridge your connection and turn on "internet connection sharing"

When you install the second Ethernet card highlight both cards and right click and you will see the "bridge option"

On the card that has your incoming internet connection make sure you allow connection sharing

Well, you COULD do it, but it makes no sense. 2nd card will cost you almost as much as a hub, plus it would be pain in the ass to configure and you could have potential conflicts.

You can get an Ethernet card for like 5 bucks at Fry's.... also you don't want to use a hub, rather a switch.

A hub broadcasts to each port which will slow down your network considerably.

Don't forget to use a crossover cable between the XBOX and the PC.

You can get a wired router pretty cheap though.

The biggest drawback I can think of is your PC has to be on for the XBOX to get online. Other than that either way will work OK.

This thread doesnt apply to you Kate. Windows 95 doesnt support Internet Connection Sharing.

If you have a router, why would you want to run it through you computer as a router? Configure the router and plug it in there...

Because he would have to run another cable.

To me that is easier than configuring and supporting ICS (internet connection sharing) but whatever.

:)

Router in another room, only one feed from that router leads into my bedroom..

And ryan, I hear the wireless adapter for the 360 sucks, and i don't want to spend 100 bucks on it

Sure you can.

Not from the cable modem unless you have multiple addresses from the ISP. However, from a router you could plug the network cable into the switch uplink port then plug the two devices into the switch.

Is it better to do this or just install a wireless router?

I recently brought back my computer from school, and we only have one internet connection box thingy, and i was wondering about how I was going to get internet. I called Cox and they said i had to get a wireless thing for my computer. Should I just buy a hub?

technically a switch is what you need, and no idea why cox cable wouldn't work, works on all cable providers here.... :?

It depends what you mean specifically by box thingy. :)

There should be a cable modem that has a coax cable input from the wall like the one that goes to your TV or cable box. That same box will have an ethernet or USB out to a computer. If that is all you have then you are limited to one PC on the internet. (unless you use one computer as a router as is asked about in this thread).

What most people will do is plug the ethernet cable from the modem into a router. Many routers have a switch/hub built in so you can plug in several computers into it. Then then there are wireless routers that have a wireless access point built in. The router creates a one-to-many situation with the internet connection. A hub by itself cannot do this with a typical cable internet connection. The router also acts as a firewall to give you computers some protection from people trying to get to your computers over the internet.

If you have the wireless router and a wireless adapter in the computer that just means you can connect to the router without having to run an ethernet cable between the router and the PC. With out the wireless router the wireless adapter for your computer does no good.

I hope all this makes sense and is helpful to you.

It does, and it was. Thanks, Chaz - you are always so helpful whenever I have computer questions! I have exactly what you described in your first paragraph - I think I will go with the wireless route as I would not want to run a cord throughout my entire apartment, from connection to connection.
