I have an aging (2004), once top-shelf Viewsonic CRT monitor on the computer I do most of my work-work with, and I realized a few days ago that the text clarity is terrible compared to my newer laptop or the other, newer, more graphics-oriented set up (with a 2-yr old Samsung 21" syncmaster widescreen). I read/write on this thing sometimes 6-8 hours a day, and the strain has finally gotten truly intolerable.

Did some research - looks like to get the best text rendition I want 300 brightness, high native resolution, matte but not anti-glare surface and 1000:1 or better (non-dynamic) contrast. And everything says to go for DVI.
However, the Dell E520 I use with Windows XP Pro is perfectly fine for work-use, I have NO desire to get a new computer or OS, but it only has VGA connection.

Q. 1) Is it possible/feasible/sensible to install a DVI-whatever in my current computer? If so, what kind of difficulty/cost should I expect?

Q. 2) If NOT possible, am I being realistic to still expect better text clarity with any very good-quality new LCD-LED widescreen, even using VGA?

Q. 3) What am I missing?

DVI will give you better clarity than vga.

Vga clarity is also going to depend on the quality of your cable.

For DVi output you will need a graphics card with a PCI Express x16 interface and a dvi connection. You should be able to find a good example for under $100.

It will install pretty easily into your E520.
For instructions on installing cards see here.

Once the card is installed connect your monitor, boot windows, and install the correct drivers.

MESA! :thud:
Dcr says you could also get a dvi to VGA adapter; would cost around $5, and you could find out easily if that's good enough for you.

I must have missed the CRT info last night.

Keep in mind you will need the dvi connection on both the monitor and card to get the full advantages of the dvi connection.

The clarity comes from not having to convert from digital to analog and back. If you have an analog (crt) monitor then dvi to vga benefits are limited.

Time to lose the boat anchor, Ms. Pam!!! Lotsa great monitors out there that are bigger, brighter and better (not to mention eating up far less desk space) for 200 clams or less.

(...course, leave it to me to spend your money for you..... ;) )

Not to mention the LCD's are much, much better for your eyes than the CRT's
