Star Control 2 was first introduced on the PC in 1992 and later ported to the 3DO. The story goes something like this...
Earth's first contact with another species came in the mid 20th century. A race known as the Chenjesu pleaded for Earths help in a war against the Ur Quan and its battle thralls. The Alliance of Free Stars was looking for new members, as it had been on the losing end of battle for decades. Earth reluctantly agreed to join the fight after learning that they could either fight with the Alliance or fall seperately to the Ur Quan. The war continued to go badly and eventually the Alliance was split and collapsed, and Earth fell. Rather than join the Ur Quan and enslave other species, the humans decided to be put under a slave shield, that prevented humans from entering space, enslaving them on their own world.
Meanwhile a group of scientists were stranded on a world, once inhabited by a now extinct alien species known as the Precursers. There they found a factory and enough resources to build one ship, partially complete. This ship is extremely powerful, but needs upgrades. With this ship, a young captain has the potential to reform the Alliance of Free Stars and revolt against the Ur Quan.
As the player your job is to make contact with a human space station and begin to upgrade your ship. There are literally hundreds of star systems to explore, more than a dozen races to make contact with and mysteries to solve.
This game was great because of the insane depth, both in areas you can explore and the story line. The original creaters of the game were able to get the source code back from whatever company ended up buying it and put it on the internet for programers to rebuild and make it playable on windows XP. If anyone is interested in playing it, there is a link availible at
