That is awesome. It seems like all the writeups I see on him are he doesn't like contact. Every play I saw, he was cutting back into the field and taking shots to get extra yardage. Didn't see him go out of bounds once. This kid is going to be this years Devin Hester. I just hope he doesn't get hurt, if he gets hit when he's going full speed like that.....

devin hester??? not that special. but the kid turns it up and seems to have really nice acceleration through openings. hopefully he's tough enough on the next level. but i think he could really help our STs.

That's great, but we don't have the cap room to sign him.

This guy looks like he will be pretty exciting to watch. Right now I never get excited to watch JJ or BJ return a kick since it rarely ever amounts to anything exciting.

From the highlight reel alone, it looks like he has a tendancy to try and run around players rather than hitting the hole hard. Mainly in the beginning where it showed some of his punt returns. He hit the hole fine on the kickoffs.

He's got some nice speed!

I loved the way he accelerated right by defenders and outran them in the open field. Just what the doctor ordered for the Cardinal return game.

But as a receiver, Breaston seems to be a mixed bag. His write-ups suggest less than stellar ball skills and someone who's physically slender and can get pushed around both at LOS and during routes. Yet he had a very productive week of East - West practices. A few quotes from the War Room:

"The star of the day, without question, was Michigan wide receiver, Steve Breaston. He caughtmany passes without any drops, including four deep passes that would have been touchdowns. He ran excellent routes and showed the burst to get separation and the speed to stretch the separation and run away from cornerbacks deep."

"Breaston had a very disappointing senior season and had fallen way down the NFL draft boards, but he shined this week and played like he did in 2005. He caught the ball extremely well. He showed the ability to adjust and make great catches on off-target passes. He helped himself enough to move back up into the third or fourth round consideration."

"Breaston continued a strong week of catching the ball by making a number of good grabs. He did his best work catching passes along the sideline and tapping his feet out of bounds. His play as a receiver in the game was more remniscent of his dynamic 2005 than his disappointing '06. As a returner, however, he muffed a punt which will scare teams a little about his skills in that capacity."


Ironically, my feelings about Breaston run parallel to my feelings about teammate Alan Branch - the possibilities make you drool, but there's that nagging concern about whether he'll fail to deliver as a pro. (In both instances, though, their upside far outweighs their potential downside).

The difference is that we cannot afford for Branch, a second rounder to be a bust. No one will care is Breaston turns out to be a bum. Historically, many of our 5th rounders never play a down in the NFL. For the record though, I love both of the picks. Branch will be a force that every team will have to consider when drawing up their gameplan and Breaston will instantly become the most dangerous return man we have had in 10 years.
