Mavs make play for Raptors' Carter
By Art Garcia

With the departure of their Canadian star official today, the Mavericks could potentially bring another northern star south.
A three-team deal is being discussed, according to league sources, that would ship Toronto All-Star forward Vince Carter to the Mavs. The third team is possibly New York, with the Mavs sending Antoine Walker to the Knicks.
New York could send a number of different combinations to the Raptors. Players thought to be in the mix are Shandon Anderson, Dikembe Mutombo and Kurt Thomas. Golden State has also been mentioned as a possible third team, with Erick Dampier as the main component.
The deal, however, is hardly done. One league source pins the odds of the Mavs adding Carter in the same vicinity as those in the Shaquille O'Neal sweepstakes. The Miami Heat landed O'Neal, but the Mavs are hardly done shopping.
"We have a lot of lines out at this point," president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said Tuesday night.
Acquiring Carter and moving Walker is the key, at least for the Mavs, in this proposal. Carter, 27, is a four-time All-Star and former Team USA Olympian with a career scoring average of 23.8 points. Known for his explosive above-the-rim play, Carter has also been injury prone in recent seasons, failing to play more than 60 games twice in the last three years.
The Mavs have been open with their willingness to move Walker, who just didn't fit in with the team last season after arriving via a trade with Boston. Should Walker go to the Knicks, he would be back in the Eastern Conference, where his career flourished.
Carter would appear to lessen the shock of losing Steve Nash, Canada's favorite basketball son. Nash is signing a six-year contract with the Phoenix Suns today as the free-agent signing period opens.
Carter is one of the NBA's bankable stars, but his potential addition further logjams the Mavs' glut at small forward/shooting guard. Michael Finley, Marquis Daniels, Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse are also swingmen.
Should the Mavs pull off the Carter trade, it seems likely other deals are on the horizon. The team remains in the hunt for a starting point guard and an upgrade at center.
As a player in the last year of his contract, Walker is a valuable commodity for teams looking to cut payroll after the coming season. He's set to make $14.6 million this season. Carter would be a sizable financial undertaking with four years left on his contract for $58 million.
Three to sign
Marquis Daniels, Avery Johnson and free agent center Didier Ilunga-Mbenga are set to sign deals with the Mavericks today.
Daniels, coming off an impressive rookie season, has agreed to a six-year extension for at least $38 million. He's now set to join the Mavs' summer league at the Rookie Mountain Review in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ilunga-Mbenga is inking a two-year deal starting at $1.6 million.
Johnson would begin his second Mavs tour, agreeing to a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $1.1 million. Though Johnson will serve as insurance at point guard, his main duties will be as an assistant coach.
"He's going to be my right-hand man on the bench," said Mavs coach Don Nelson, who hopes to groom Johnson as his successor. "I'm glad that I get to initiate him into the coaching profession."
Johnson's playing status will be resolved during training camp. Whether Johnson plays or not, he'll be counted on to tutor young point guards Devin Harris and Daniels, and preach defense. Johnson often conducted practices during his first stint with the Mavs.
Johnson's agent Tony Dutt said his client is excited about transitioning from player to coach.
"At this stage, it's not about money," Dutt said. "It's about preparing for his future. Avery is trying to make a decision on what's best down the road, not just for tomorrow."
Trade talk
Antoine Walker could be part of a deal that brings Vince Carter to Dallas.
Are they kidding? Vince Carter for parts like Kurt Thomas and Shandon Anderson? What?
