Just to be clear so we can all look back on this in 5 years (whether he is a Card or not) and see who thinks VY if HOF material or Akili Smith's cousin.

edit:

oops misspelled "arduous"

There is no relation...Smith was a workout wonder who rose up after the combine and a decent last year. VY, if anything, has been hurt by the combine.

The point of the analogy was that he will have a mega-disappointing pro career. Would you rather I chose Ryan Leaf?

If he is available at #10 and Leinart and Cutler are off the board..then I would consider it..but Denny wants to win now..in that case you sign a decent backup to Warner and sing Vernon Davis or a Stud Defensive player..Glad I don't have to make that call :)

I get your analogy but the facts are that Smith's rise upthe charts and VY's rise are completly contrarian.

I don't know how to vote on this thread.

He has done nothing but win so far.....and has had two of the most amazing performances I think I've ever seen at the College Football level. (OK, Barry Sanders was a little more dazzling....but still, his 2 Rose Bowls were Jaw dropping.)

He has not played in a Pro Style offense......he has relied on athleticism to make plays. Don't know how quickly he'll pick up the pro game, or if he'll be able to outrun NFL Lbs.

If we take him I won't complain....I just pray we go and get him the best QB coaches money can buy.

My point was to make folks make a choice. I'm on the side with serious misgiving regarding his long term potential. I could be horribly wrong too.

But Young did make a lot of plays with his arm. That's why I can see him succeeding as a QB at the next level. He isn't Vick; he's a much better passer.

I consider Young to be a mix of Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon. Either way, the Cards are the big winners in all this, and I'm firmly on the WELCOME TO ARIZONA VINCE YOUNG wagon.

If Young is there we should grab him even though winning this year is a key to the future of our fan base. He is a great athlete. To good to pass up.Will he be a great QB? Heck, I don't know. But I have time and can pick him up at the airport.

If he is there at #10 the Cards will take him. Remeber the final say will not be Denny Green but Michael Bidwill. In fact if any of the top three qbs fall to #10 (Leinart, Cutler, or Young) they will be the pick.

I have deep concerns. Perhaps intelligence is not key in all NFL positions, but QB is definately not one of those. A guy on ESPN radio was going over all the QBs with low Wonderlic scores -- there's a very strong correlation for QB success in the NFL and a high score (Brady, Manning, etc.)

His attitude is horrible; he hasn't exactly wowed everyone leading up to the draft. I say stay away -- he's Ryan Leaf all over again.

Exactly.

Young is one of the hardest player to evaluate in a long time, and who knows what he turns out to be...

BUT, if he's sitting there at #10, his potential is too good to pass on. I wouldn't trade up to get him, but I have no problem drafting him at #10.

Whether he's ready right now or not, one tremendous hedge against failure is that, with Vince Young, you're starting out with a superb athlete.

IMO....Vick has succeeded at the NFL level....2 NFC Championship games is my proof.

I'd take Young.....don't think he'll fall....but he's going to need some great coaching. There is no doubt in my mind about that. He isn't ready to go like a Matt Leinart.

Greatest thing since slice bread and peanut butter. If it doesn't work out, hope we have a lot of water to wash it down in the desert. I see him more in the out come as say a Culpepper or McNabb than Akili's Coach's Heal Smith

The guy on ESPN was making stuff up. Here's actual evidence proving his theory incorrect.

I'd say his decision making has been horrible, especially when it comes to who he is surrounding himself with. But his attitude is supposedly terrific. He was the team leader and heart of last year's Texas team both off and on the field. And he's supposedly a warrior in the weight room and makes sure his teammates are too. Everything I've heard about VY says he is a born leader.

From Pasquarelli (who spoke to 5 scouts after Young's Pro Day:
-"Most of the scouts we spoke with had some concerns about Young's much-discussed low release point, a three-quarters or sidearm delivery that takes inches off his pocket stature. But most felt some minor corrections could rectify that. No one was alarmed by Young's time in the 40-yard dash, reportedly in the 4.58-second range, because few of the scouts felt he would run much faster than that anyway. "We're not talking about [Michael] Vick here, you know?" said the personnel chief from one AFC team. Of much concern, still, is that Young, after nearly a full career working out of the shotgun formation, will have to adjust to playing behind center at the next level.

By far, though, the most noted shortcoming from Young's throwing session was what one scout termed a "lazy" arm. "I'm not talking about an [elongated] delivery, a bad release, any of that stuff," the scout said. "There are just some throws, mostly short ones, where he just kind of nonchalants the ball. It's like he's bored by some of what he considers to be easy throws. He doesn't snap the ball off on those passes. His arm gets limp and he short-arms them. And that carries down to his footwork, where he doesn't get set and tends to throw flat-footed, [to] not step into the throw." None of the scouts, however, was very critical of Young and all think he is still a solid top-10 pick."

With the No. 7 choice in the first round, it would take Oakland officials about a nanosecond to turn in the card with Young's name on it, were he still available at their slot. And for those who still insist Young will slide out of the top 10, well, forget about it. His ultimate stopping point is the No. 10 pick, where Arizona coach Dennis Green would be thrilled to provide a safety net for any plummet down the board.
