PHOENIX – The Milwaukee Brewers are still finalizing the final corners of their opening day roster, but at least one player on the bubble this spring knows he’s headed to New York with the team on Tuesday.

Journeyman infielder Vinny Capra has made the team, manager Pat Murphy said Sunday morning at American Family Fields of Phoenix.

It will be the first time on an opening day roster for Capra.

The 28-year-old came to camp without any minor league options remaining, which meant that he had to make the team out of spring training or he would find himself on waivers. In a way, that gave Capra a leg up on some of the other players on the fringes of the Brewers’ roster situation given the organization’s preference to maintain depth, but it wound up being Capra’s performance this spring that made it an easy call.

In 17 games and 50 plate appearances entering Sunday, Capra was slashing .279/.354/.698 with five home runs.

The power is a revelation for Capra, who has hit just 30 homers and slugged .395 in six minor-league seasons. He’s swinging with improved bat speed this spring in hopes of impacting the ball greater.

Capra figures to be the side opposite Oliver Dunn, a left-handed hitter, in the third base platoon for Milwaukee. Odds are he will be in the opening day lineup against the New York Yankees, who are starting lefty Carlos Rodon on Thursday.

Pitchers Elvin Rodriguez, unsurprisingly, is likely on the team.

"That call’s already been made," Murphy said. "There’s a high likelihood he’s on the team."

That leaves only a couple of spots undecided upon for the Brewers.

"We’re almost there," Murphy said. "We’re not quite there because we’re waiting on particulars, dot the I’s and cross some T’s on some things."

Murphy suggested the Brewers are leaning toward rostering Abner Uribe to start the year. Uribe has to serve a four-game suspension immediately upon joining the active roster, but serving it to open the year would get it out of the way while the pitching staff is fresh.
