Vintage arcade center opens in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. -- Step back in time to when you used to have to go to an actual arcade to play video games! We're talking classics like Donkey Kong, Pac Man, even the original Asteroids. Those games and more are all at Starfighters Arcade to play.

“There's a very large underground cult, community, that really loves these games,” said Mike Lovato, who joined with Steve Thomas to open the vintage arcade in Mesa. The men are big time collectors and players, and between the two of them, they've collected 107 games.

“The games we have set to free play, so you come into our club and pay a club membership to be able to play our games. They used to be money making machines, but they're getting older, so we have to do what we can to keep them in perfect working order,” said Steve Thomas.

Starfighters Arcade is open Friday and Saturday nights, starting at 7.

SPACE FURY!!!

"So, a creature for my amusement...prepare for battle!"

One of my favorite arcade games of all time. They got Dragon's Lair too. I lost many a quarter playing that.

Space Ace was the game I loved.

Nice. They mention a subscription and then don't list the price. Sigh

Yeah, that was lame.

The facebook page has the info though:

The arcade will offer three different types of PACC (Phoenix Arcade Collectors Club) memberships:

$14 for single day with a guest; $30 for a month with two guests and the opportunity to have a private event party; and $120 for a year with two guests and two private event parties. Each package includes unlimited game play on a plethora of machines.

Looks like a good time. Way too far away though. Also, if they are a "club", do they serve food and drinks?

Hope they can make it, but it has to be tough now days. Great concept, but I can't see people going more than once, maybe twice.

Was psyched to hear about this place and the price seemed great...until I found out their hours.

Every Friday and Saturday they are open from 7 PM to 11 PM.

Really?

That's it? 8 hours a week...?

Pass.

I bet that plan stands to give them the best chance to survive and is obviously someone's side business. Why be open 30 hours a week and have to hire employees if its empty?
