I am starting to try to rip DVDs (for backup purposes) and was wondering if anyone knew of a free tool to convert 1.5GB VOB files to 300MB DivX files?

Help me ASFN, you are my only hope.

Gordian Knot rippack 0.35.0 pack2 - contains basic software to do SBC, DivX5 and XviD encoding as described in my guides - contains vStrip 0.8f CSS, DGIndex 1.2.1, BeSweet 1.5b30, azidts 0.1, vsfilter, Decomb 5.2.1, fluxsmooth, Convolution3D, Deen, TomsMoComp, AviSynth 2.55, VobSub 2.23, VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1/2540, Nandub RC2 lumafix ecffix, chapterXtractor 0.962 and Robot4Rip 0.5.

Gordian Knot Codec Pack 1.9 - audio and video codecs for GKnot encoding if you don't have it already - contains DivX3.11alpha, DivX5.12 Pro trial, XviD Koepi 1.0.3, Huffyuv 0.2.2.1, AC3Filter 0.70b, mpgaudioax, Morgan Stream Switcher and ffdshow alpha 2004-10-12
---------------------------------
Gordian Knot is a piece of software that largely automates this process. I don't know what you're using to rip, but IMO the best software out there is still DVD Decrypter. Unfortunately future development was shutdown due to Macrovision. A good feature about it lets you parse complete dvds so you can separate episodes of a show or extras. After you have separated the vobs, the rest is pretty simple. You can set the target file size and audio bitrate among other things. You can also crop out black bars if you need to. You can also setup batch encodes which again is useful if you're ripping tv discs.

Cool, I will give it a shot. I am using DVD Shrink to rip to VOB, it creates a VOB for each episode on the DVD.

Jeez, this new free program looks awesome.

http://www.any-dvd-converter.com/

The program supports just about every video format known to man, including AVI, DivX, FLV, RM, and VOB. It also comes with output profiles for devices like the iPod and PSP, though you can easily create a custom profile with the audio and video specs of your choosing.
