Each week during the school year, The News-Press selects athletes that stood out the week before based on a combination of coach reports and school nominations sent to [email protected] and our coverage. Those athletes are put in a poll each Monday on news-press.com and you, our readers, vote on who you think did it best.

The winners of The News-Press Athlete of the Week poll sponsored by Elevate Home Services receive a T-shirt provided by BSN Sports and a tote bag provided by USA Today High School Sports Awards. Voting ends at 10 a.m. Thursday each week. The winner will be announced on the @newspresssports Instagram page and on Twitter at @nphssports.

The winner of the last poll was Dunbar track and field athlete Kobe Johnson.

Here are the nominees for March 24-29:

Boys track​

Colin Meagher, Canterbury

Meagher won the high jump with a PR at the North Port Invitational on Friday.

Girls track​

Skyla Stevens, North Fort Myers

Stevens won the 400 meters at the Immokalee Last Chance Meet and contributed to the Red Knights winning 4x400 and 4x800 relays on Saturday.

Baseball​

Jakob Wagner, North Fort Myers

Wagner totaled eight hits in four games, including three hits and a home run in a win against Palmetto Ridge and three hits and a triple in a win against Lehigh last week.

Softball​

Amira Peterson, Fort Myers

Peterson hit home runs in back-to-back games for the Green Wave last Friday. She tallied eight hits for Fort Myers last week, getting at least one in the five games they played last week.

Flag football​

Shannen Murtaugh, Gateway

Murtaugh had a pick-6, 6 flag pulls and 2 deflections in a 13-0 win against Cape Coral on Monday.

Mia Standard, Mariner

Standard threw three touchdown passes in a 26-0 win against Cape Coral on Tuesday.

Girls tennis​

Alexis Neumann, North Fort Myers

Neumann secured victories in singles and doubles for the Red Knights to defeat Ida Baker 6-1 on Tuesday.

Boys weightlifting​

Mitchelot Pierre, East Lee County

Pierre contributed to the Jaguars' winning effort at the Class 3A-13 meet, getting wins in the unlimited weight class with a 580-pound lift in Traditional and 465-pound lift in Olympic on Saturday.
