I've just returned from a tour of some other Suns boards (best left unnamed
) and find everyone hashing over the same trade options we've discussed on this board. One thing that I have not seen discussed is the case for waiting until the trading deadline before making a major deal.
It strikes me that there are several good reasons to hold off:
1. We'll know if Lampe is a player. If Lampe fails to perform with the added minutes of being in the rotation, the Suns will know they need to find a starter. On the other hand, if he does moderately well, they will know all they need is another backup banger for the playoffs.
2. There is a reasonable chance that the Suns trading pieces will be more valuable. Right now Carbakapa and Eisley have zero trade value, but they may be much more valuable if perform during periods when they get to play (it may be restricted to blowouts, but minutes are minutes). Jacobsen has looked good during summer league, but he won't attract real attention until he performs during the regular season.
3. By February, some teams will know if they are completely out of contention and will be more open to making moves than during the summer when everyone thinks they'll make the playoffs.
4. Teams with cap space are more inclined to sell their space because half the player's salary is already covered and part of the balance can be covered with a cash payment.
5. Teams with guys with expiring contracts are more open to unloading the player if they decide they don't want to pay to keep him. It would be much more likely moves on expiring contracts of Ilgauskas and Ratliff would be made late rather than early.
I'm not saying that there will be a great deal available, but there is certainly a chance something will come up that is not available now.
