I really hope this doesn't mean the type of films New Line focused on changes. They were actually a breath of fresh air because they did films nobody else was interested in. Sometimes that was good and sometimes bad.

However, overall I think it was healthy.

Like what? I'd like to hear examples of these films nobody else was interested in.

New Line is owned by Time Warner. Warner Bros. is owned by Time Warner. Combining the two is little more than a formality and helps with the multiple legal issues the studio has been facing. Warner Bros. will nip that stuff in the bud a lot faster than New Line ever could.

I'm pretty sure Time Warner owns us all.

Cutting loose 75% of their staff is more than a formality...

New Line's Staff to be Cut by 75%?

Variety reports that Time Warner Inc.'s move to make New Line Cinema a unit of Warner Bros. Pictures might mean the end of the line for most of New Line's 600 employees and uncertainty for New Line's slate.

The trade says the emerging consensus is that at least 75% of New Line's employees will be axed in the coming months while a bare-bones staff stays on -- a plan reminiscent of what happened to Disney's Miramax arm after the Weinstein brothers departed in 2005.

Time Warner, which has been under pressure to cut costs and hike its stagnant stock price, will name a "transition team" shortly to handle the specifics of folding New Line into Warner Bros.

Though he's remaining on the job for the time being, New Line production president Toby Emmerich is widely expected to quit the company. It's also anticipated that New Line will vacate its New York office and its West Hollywood HQ and move operations onto the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.

Warner will decide how to handle New Line's upcoming films, though specific decisions on possible date switches aren't expected for several more weeks. New Line's next films are Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo on April 25 and Sex and the City on May 30.

More changes...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Pictures president & COO Alan Horn announced that both Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures are closing.

"With New Line now a key part of Warner Bros., we're able to handle films across the entire spectrum of genres and budgets without overlapping production, marketing and distribution infrastructures," Horn said.

"After much painstaking analysis, this was a difficult decision to make, but it reflects the reality of a changing marketplace and our need to prudently run our businesses with increased efficiencies. We're confident that the spirit of independent filmmaking and the opportunity to find and give a voice to new talent will continue to have a presence at Warner Bros."

Employees of Picturehouse and WIP will meet soon to discuss the status of their upcoming projects, as well as distribution of already-dated films.
