It sort of reminds me of the quote from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, "ships that pass in the night" with both teams going in opposite directions.

Well, Sam Henkie is out and Jerry Colangelo is in so it's going to take a while to right the ship but at least they're going in the right direction. Problem is, Henkie "system" has set the Sixers back for the next 5 years or more. The constant drafting/trading for injured players is a real head scratcher let alone trading the ROY for basically nothing. They do have some high picks this year but I have a feeling that the rigged lottery will put either the Knicks or Lakers at #1.

Hinkie has a lot to answer for but trading the ROY isn't really one of them. MCW was a horrible ROY, only won it due to lack of competition and the fact that losing was their stated goal. He was perfect for a team trying to lose but for a team that wanted to win games or develop players, not so much.

They have a lot to work with although it will take them a while to turn things around. The real crime was that he dismantled a decent team and sold off assets for pennies on the dollar. I'd also question some of his draft choices. But they have some building blocks and they have several extra draft picks so no matter how bleak it looks now, they can always console themselves with the fact that they aren't Brooklyn. We all can.

I mean the moves Hinkie made at the time I don't really disagree with. I suppose he could've given a bunch of cash to Hakim Warrick and Josh Childress instead of deciding to bottom out.

But when do you stop? They've been bottoming out for 4 years and I bet they would have done it again next year if Hinkie were still around. His plan appeared to be "suck until you get a generational player". He wasn't even bothering to get talent. In trades he took busted and bad players and draft picks, they didn't sign anyone in free agency, even with their picks they deliberately targeted guys who they knew were injured because they didn't care if they played for a while.

Do you go out and get Warrick and Childress type players? No, but you can start swinging trades for actual talent, you can at the very least sign some guys off the scrap heap and hope you stumble into a good player. Instead they were basically a D-League team being propped up by the rest of the franchises via revenue sharing.

IMO the league should have stepped in a year or two ago and told them to knock it off.
