Texas A&M (20-15, 6-9 SEC) has been resurrected from the college baseball graveyard after sweeping South Carolina, capping things with Saturday' epic comeback win after trailing the Gamecocks 12-2 before storming back with two consecutive grand slams in the bottom of the night, improbably winning 15-12.
According to Texas A&M's Associate Director, Athletic Communications Kyle Stafford, Texas A&M is only the 30th team in Division 1 history to hit two grand slams in the ninth inning, while the 10-run comeback is the largest in program history since at least the 1974 season. Momentum-wise, this is a step in the right direction, as the road only gets tougher with road tests against No. 1 Arkansas and rival Texas over the next two weekends looming.
Two weeks ago, it looked like the season was all but over until consecutive wins over then-No. 1-ranked Tennessee on the road was the start of what is now a six-game winning streak, and after Saturday's finish, it looks like the Aggie bats are no longer a nagging issue.
After Blake Binderup's home run, paired with two more runs in the seventh inning, the Aggies trailed 12-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, leading to 12th Man representative Hayden Schott hitting the first grand slam of the inning, and after Ben Royo, Nathan Tobin, and Bear Harrison loaded the bases once again, Kaeden Kent, with two outs, took full advantage of an inside fastball, blasting the pitch for his second, ninth-inning grand slam of his Aggie career.
Hayden Schott is one of the best situational hitters in the country, so credit to head coach Michael Earley for placing him in the lineup to give the offense a chance. For Kent, he is officially Mr. Clutch and will continue to be counted on this season to deliver big hits in key situations.
Before facing Arkansas on the road, starting on Thursday, Texas A&M will host Tarleton State on Tuesday night, looking to extend its winning streak to seven games.
