The Waterloo Black Hawks could assure themselves of home-ice advantage during the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs as early as this week.
The Hawks will play three games this week, starting Tuesday on the road against the Des Moines Buccaneers to wrap up a four-game road swing. They’ll return home Friday to host the Sioux Falls Stampede and the NTDP U18s on Saturday.
Waterloo’s magic number to getting home ice will be trimmed via wins or Fargo Force losses.
The Black Hawks, who went 3-0-0 in three road games last week, trail Sioux Falls by 11 points in the Western Conference. A win against the Bucs would give them 30 for the season, which would mark the seventh time in the last nine seasons they have won 30 or more games. They also reached 40 victories twice during that span.
Last season, Waterloo posted 35 victories. Winning six of their final eight regular-season games would equal that mark.
In last week’s action, Waterloo rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 shootout victory over the Stampede Friday. It was the team’s largest comeback since March 9, 2010.
Friday in Dubuque, the Hawks came away with a 7-3 win against the Fighting Saints, led by Grady Deering’s hat trick. They capped the week with a 3-1 win against Cedar Rapids.
Tuesday’s game against the Buccaneers will be the final time the Black Hawks play on the road within Iowa’s borders during the regular season. In games played at Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Dubuque and Sioux City, Waterloo is a combined 6-4-3 this season. However, the club picked up victories during their most recent games in each of those four venues, including a 4-2 triumph at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex Feb. 1.
The Bucs are coming off a 4-2 win over the Omaha Lancers last Friday. Jack Kernan leads the team in goals (27) and points (49), while Ben Kevan leads in assists (29).
Puck drop for Tuesday’s contest is set for 6:30 Pm CT.
