PIEDMONT – Jami Watson cracked a solo home run with one out in the top of the fourth inning and that proved to be the difference in East Central’s 2-1 win over a red-hot Southern Nazarene University squad Sunday evening.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Bethany but was moved to the turf field at Piedmont High School after rain soaked the area for most of the weekend.

East Central improved to 14-18 overall and 7-14 in GAC play. The Crimson Storm fell to 22-14 and 13-8 and saw its eight-game win streak end.

The two teams attempted to continue their three-game Great American Conference series at Tere Webber Field in Bethany Monday.

Watson hit her blast over the fence in left field to put East Central ahead 2-1 and neither team scored again. It was Watson’s third home run of the year.

Southern Nazarene struck first in the bottom of the first inning after Kenedi Morelock drove in Hailey Evans on a sac fly.

The Tigers answered in the top of the third inning when Addisyn Cox led off with a double down the left-field line, went to third on a groundout by Carsyn Cox, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Elyse LeClair that made it 1-1.

The game featured a classic battle between pitchers — Brooklyn Charnock of East Central and Janie Worthington of Southern Naz. Charnock, who notched her third win of the spring, struck out three, walked one and allowed just one earned run in a strong complete-game effort. Worthington also tossed seven full innings. She struck out six, walked two and allowed two earned runs.,

East Central finished with just four total hits and the Crimson Storm came up with five — including doubles by Hailey Evans and Liana Heshiiki.
