Usually I don't pile onto the ASU/UofA hate, but this one's just too ridiculous.
Stoops takes shot at ASU's academics

Score this in-state recruiting round to Arizona State, but University of Arizona coach Mike Stoops managed to sneak in a verbal jab on signing day.

"Obviously," Stoops said, "Arizona State has turned into a JC, and we're a four-year college."
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/asu/articles/0206stoops.html

For those of you scoring at home, ASU brought in five JC recruits in comparison to UofA's... five. Considering UofA's headliner is a JC recruit that got bounced from Texas for academic issues, Stoops doesn't exactly have a whole lot of room to talk. As the Republic's Jeff Metcalfe notes, UofA's football program has had six scholarships taken away in the last two years as an NCAA penalty for having the lowest Academic Progress Rate in the Pac-10, where has ASU has lost zero.

Well, he's got to do something to blend in so maybe no one can spot him in the crowd when they bring the noose at the end of next season.

This reminds me of Rudy Carpenter running his mouth against USC.

Don't let your mouth write checks your ass can't cash, win some games then you can start popping off.

Stoops is combative. I like that. The class he did recruit is decent.

I'm not bagging on him because he's bitter three of his top recruits jumped over to ASU. I'd be bitter too.

His quote has to do with those three recruits. The recruits told the U of A that they had a better chance at getting into ASU thats why they made the switch.

bitter is fine - but you have to have some control

they took some guys that we were going to admit so their standards must be lower than ours........... ?!

he got killed in his own back yard by a new coach who has more success both on the field and in recruiting his home region than the old coach - the only way he's ever going to change that is by winning some games - until that point all he can be is bitter

Agree with Skorp. Stoops is pissed about what Erikson told those three recruits about being able to get them in much easier than at UA, due to his plan that he has been using at every college he coached at.

With that said, Stoops is now in the limelight, because he hasnt beat ASU in years and if he has another crappy season and ASU beats us again, these comments will come back up in a heartbeat. He better cover his ass by have a fine year and for once beating ASU.

ASU fans are so sensitive and the average ASU fan never even went there.

Well, that's because what Stoops said isn't exactly correct.

UA and ASU will both let in any athlete that passes the minimum NCAA requirements which you better have serious disadvantages not to be able to surpass. UA is however a bit more strict than ASU for regular students although the margin isn't exactly Michigan - Michigan State. It's more like a very, very poor and uneducated man's Stanford versus UCLA.

ASU's academics isn't the reason Stoops managed to pull in a mediocre recruiting class. The lack of wins, embarrassing sideline behavior, and allowing his best recruiter to take a co-OC job at a Conference USA school in the middle of recruiting season that doomed this class. Oh well, we should be able to pull in a good class next year with our new coach.

More on Stoops...

From USA Today...

"Stoops has a different beef. Wednesday, he said Arizona State has easier entrance requirements than Arizona and proceeded to call his rival school "a J.C.," as in junior college.

Predictably, Arizona State failed to see the humor in Stoops' remarks.

"Our academic standards are as high as Arizona's," Virgil Renzulli, ASU vice president for public affairs, said in a phone interview Thursday. "All three state universities (including Northern Arizona) are governed by the same board of regents. The academic profile for our incoming freshmen class is the same as the University of Arizona's with the exception that we admit 40% more students.

"I don't think any of us understand the comment. It's just inaccurate. This is not an informed comment or an appropriate one in our opinion."

NCAA academic indicators for athletes in school — the Academic Progress Rate — show Arizona football with a score of 883, well below the 925 standard. Arizona State is at 926.

Later Thursday, Stoops issued an apology: "Yesterday in my annual signing day news conference I regretfully made some comments about sister institution Arizona State University.

"These remarks were dutifully reported by the media, and not necessarily taken out of context — which was within some of my heartfelt observations about the recruiting process and what it entails for individuals and college football programs.

"I've since spoken with ASU coach Dennis Erickson. It was a personal mistake and one for which I apologize."

:biglaugh:

I'll give 100 Bucks for someone to personally give this little piece of information to Stoops....

Hey, it's UofA that likes to keep calling ASU "Tempre Normal." Can't have it both ways...

I'm trying to think of a comment ever made by a coach at ASU or UofA that comes close to the stupidity of what Stoops said. I can't even think of a close second.

I can't even think of a player ever coming out and saying something so uninformed and these are 18-21 yr old kids we are talking about.

Stoops is down to his last life line, what an idiot.

Here's one...

"Send out the punt team"

Dirk Koetter despite being down a TD with a minute left having no TO's against USC.

There's not enough space in the world-wide-web to discuss Stoops horrendous clock management skills.

Koetter's no longer our problem, Stoops is still very much yours. It's very nice to have a legit athletic director

Hey, December's now only ten months away so the clock is ticking on my misery. No Stoops and no Livengood; 2009 should be a good year for UofA Sports and my blood pressure.
