By this I mean players which are three down guys who establish the position and foundation of a scheme where the 'X' factor players can make a difference. Right now this defense is a lot of icing and no cake, Swiss Army Knives when we need a meat cleaver. This whole drafting versatile players crap has gotten out of control. Then to compile the problem, you have a DC in Bettcher, who seems qualified to coach high school at best, drawing up incomplete schemes where all these little versatile players get pushed around. There is no room on this defense for both Budda, Badger, Reddick and Bucannon to all be out there on every down. Badger and Bucannon, especially under Bettcher at least, offer nothing now. Keep Baker and Reddick and drop the other two... and then fill the positions around them with guys who meet the physical requirement and size to allow those two to prosper

The problem with the defense is the DL when it comes to passing. They are good run defenders but, sans a blitz, get little pressure on the QB. Golden was a bigger loss than people think. Now offenses can concentrate on Jones and there is really no other pass rushing threat. With Golden, both sides needed to be accounted for.

And lacking CC. I am not saying they made a mistake letting him go because for his age, such a signing for the length and money for his new contract was not smart... but they could have attempted a better solution than putting all their eggs in the basket with Niche

Agree. I don't think any of could have seen what a HUGE loss Campbell was.

Not true, I knew he was going to be a huge loss, but understood we could not screw our cap for two years from him.

The team really is missing Golden and CC this season. I think those two make everyone around them better. Lunch pail guys.

I did.

Dude has been one of the best DLineman in the game for the past 3-4 years now. It shouldn’t be a surprise at all that the defense looks hopeless without him.
