Dan D'Antoni's relationship with Ray Hagley sprouted during the point guard's sophomore season in 1967. Hagley was Marshall's team doctor and its biggest booster.
Over time, he also became D'Antoni's mentor, someone who pushed him to excel. The doctor saw himself in D'Antoni; someone undersized, someone unwilling to back down.
"Doc just took Danny over," said D'Antoni's sister, Kathy D'Antoni. "He believed in him. He made Danny feel like Danny was worth being Danny, and Danny just blossomed."

In early November, D'Antoni considered traveling on a chartered plane to watch Marshall play a late-season football game against East Carolina. But he learned Hagley wanted to go with his wife, Shirley, so the D'Antonis agreed to baby-sit.
