I would dig it.

Imagine Konerko batting clean up with Upton batting 3rd. Upton would see more balls over the plate belt high. No pitcher in their right mind would pitch around him to get to Konerko.

Doesn't he have an obscene contract?

And the black sox are going to have to go on a losing streak for them to start unloading.

First year of a 3 years 37 millions. I would not call it obscene, but considering his age and Paul Goldschmidt waiting in the wings, I am not sure Towers would pull that trigger. If they do not call up Paul Goldschmidt and fill 1B, it will be a one year rental IMO.

I believe that having Konerko on this team would be a huge plus. Adding a veteran hitter, who is also a team leader is a good thing. The fact that he grew up here in the valley and has his home here is another plus.

Konerko looked this organization over very closely in the off-season, and elected to go with the Sox. I don't believe that he considered how positively Gibby and his staff would effect this team, nor did he imagine that Gary Towers would bring in the talent and the leadership he did. The time might be right for the team to talk trade to the Sox for him, as he might be much more accepting of the team as it is now.

I don't think anyone expected Towers/Gibby to do what they have so far. I don't blame Konerko for passing. We can certainly afford his contract, but I also agree that we won't spend the money with Goldschmidt on his way up.

I'm guessing Mulli's got the bead on this one as much as I wish he didn't.

Who is Gary Towers? Is he who traded Mark Rennels away?

While I do so enjoy posting on this board, I am getting older and much more forgetful these days. Perhaps it would be more helpful to simply provide me with the correct spelling of names I botch-----rather than showering me with sarcasm.

Sorry to poke fun, it was just meant in jest. ;)

I say give Brandon Allen every AB until Sept. 1st. Not cutting it then, your move on and bring Goldschmidt up. It is now or never for him. He is 25, the same age Ryan Howard was when he came up in June of 05 and took over 1st for good.

This... It makes no sense to try to work a deal with Konerko and then have to pay him that huge salary, when we have a talent like Goldschmidt waiting in the wings. Konerko would be a short-term, need to win NOW move. That really isn't the case with this team...

If we got Konerko, then Goldschmidt would be great trade bait - especially to an AL team (maybe even for Konerko).

With Konerko, we'd win the West, and give the Phillies a run in the playoffs.

We CAN win this year.

Huh?? Are you serious?? Aside from Konerko, and maybe Upton if he somehow keeps up his pace, who else will be hitting against Halladay, Oswalt, Lee and Hammels? And, aside from Kennedy and Hudson, who will be prepared to stop their offense?? Colmenter is a great story, but, c'mon man... he's a rookie and will most likely begin to act like one come late July/August. And what about Putz? He's already showing signs of slowing down.

Love your enthusiasm Jon, but this team is nowhere near ready to take a run at the Phillies.
And worse, why in the world would we trade away an amazing young talent like Goldschmidt, for a 35 year old vet with a huge salary with only 2 years left on the deal??

Because the Dbacks are close. And will be getting closer over the next two years. Our staff will match theirs.

And not sold 100% on Goldschmidt, especially as a fielder.

We're getting closer for sure Jon... But Konerko is 35. This will be his last good/very good season. Yet, we'd be on the hook for another 25 million while coughing up Goldschmidt?? Just doesn't make any sense.
This team is not a contender - yet. Next season, if we add another starter and strengthen the pen, while somehow finding more consistency on offense, we very well could be a contender and could put a scare into teams in the post season. But not this year. Which means taking a shot on Konerko and giving up such promising young talent to do it makes zero sense...

I'm guessing that after this season, age will begin to creep into the picture. He might put up some decent numbers next season... maybe. But if we got him (which I really hope we don't), we will be paying roughly $25 million to a guy who will be 36 & 37 years old. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that his best years will be behind him. Heck, I'm not at all sold that he'll keep up the amazing pace he's been on so far this year. His career avarges are .280 average, 32 home runs and 102 RBI's. I am guessing that he will begin to fall short of those averages after this season. And if I'm right, paying an aging player $12 million per to get at or below those numbers, when giving up on a kid like Goldschmidt, with a team that is not ready to contend this season - just doesn't make any sense...

Yes, guessing. Doesn't matter. Sox aren't going to trade Pauly.
