Steelers | Yoga Class Included in Team's Offseason Conditioning - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 24 May 2004 12:20:53 -0700

Teresa Varley, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers strength and conditioning coach Chet Fuhrman, along with assistants Anthony Griggs and Marcel Pastoor, have included a Yoga class into the team's offseason conditioning program to improve players' flexibility. "It's challenging," said Steelers FB Dan Kreider. "It's hard to hold yourself in those positions for a certain amount of time."

I am telling you if we do this, we will have 50% less nagging injuries and strains. Steelers have the right idea, although there training room probably looks pretty funny with all of those 300 lb guys trying some of those moves.

I was in classes for about 4 months (then my instructor left) and I was amazed at the difficulty in the workout. I got more out of the 50 minutes or so of real work than I did out of a couple of hours lifting weights. I am still looking at getting in another class soon.

After a few injury filled years Fred Taylor has started taking stretching (not sure if it's yoga or just similar) classes and has been injry free and very productive the past 2 years.

There was an article about this in ESPN the magazine recently. Supposedly the guys on the Steelers really like it, and feel that it can help to eliminate injuries such as groin and hamstring pulls. Green of course has no use for this kind of nonsense!!!! He already fired the Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, and Nutritionists. You think he's going to hire a Yoga instructor??? Our guys are lucky DG gives them water on occasion so they don't die of heat stroke. DG is old school and right or wrong I don't think he's going to embrace the idea of hiring a yoga instructor.

I don't know what's worse. A freak yoga accident... or tearing up your ACL celebrating a field goal kick. :bang:
