Graves optimistic about Colvin, might have lost out on Jackson

The Cardinals remained in pursuit of defensive help Monday, apparently losing out on one free agent while staying in contention for another.

The team continued negotiations Monday night with the agent for outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, a pass rush specialist. Rod Graves, Cardinals vice president for football operations, expected to speak with Colvin's agent, Kennard McGuire, again Monday night.

"I'm encouraged," Graves said.

But it appears the team's efforts to sign safety Dexter Jackson have failed. Jackson was considering offers from the Cardinals and Pittsburgh but reportedly was nearing a deal with the Steelers on Monday night.

There were no developments Monday in the Cardinals' search for a quarterback. They have made an offer to Kordell Stewart, but he doesn't appear in a hurry to decide.

Chicago also has offered Stewart a contract, and Baltimore has expressed interest.

Jeff Blake, who started in Baltimore last year, is scheduled to visit the Cardinals today. The Cardinals have yet to sign a player in free agency.

Another visitor

Former St. Louis fullback James Hodgins is 270 pounds, but he sees himself as more than a blocking back.

"I take pride in my work, being physical out there and dominating linebackers," said Hodgins, in the Valley on Monday. "And I like to get the ball a few times a game. To me, that's the biggest thing I'm looking at in a team, someone who wants to get a fullback in there and have him contributing more than 20 percent or 30 percent of the plays in a game."

Hodgins said he was surprised when the Rams cut him in late February, just days before he was due to earn a $750,000 bonus and a year after he signed a long-term deal.

Hodgins said he plans to visit Carolina next week and might travel to Cincinnati and Oakland after that.

It looks to me like the Cards are getting used again by these free agents to drive up their market price. Graves was around when it happened before, and should know better.
