i'm building a web page for a friend. the one thing that i am unsure of is how to make it show up on search engines. I understand meta tags but what makes one site show up on page 1 of google and another site show up on page 50?

Donald had a good link but I would also recommend registering on dmoz.org, and reading sitepoint.com Dmoz is a feeder for google. But also register on google.

Next steps are to get other websites to link to you. The more websites you have linking in, the higher the page rank and the higher probability for a good google ranking.

Yeah, half those threads will probably tell you strategies to get on Dmoz.

DMOZ is the main way to get ranked...if they catalog you, you are golden. They are slow, these days though because EVERYONE wants them to rank them.
